I'm on Yasmin, and my mom mailorders my meds for me because I'm at college and barely home. Anyway, even though my mom put my school address on the form for it to be mailed, my meds were sent to my dad because he has the primary insurance, so he put the pills in the mail to me today. O_O My dad thinks they'll be here by Saturday, but mom thinks it could be a little later because of how snail mail goes. I usually start my pills the Sunday once my period's begun, and it started today, so I'd take it starting Sunday, assuming they arrive. My friend told me "As per medical advice for missed birthcontrol pills (only up to three days worth) you are advised to "double up" until you are back to a normal schedule...". Is that true? What would you guys suggest I do?

Here (http://www.yasmin-us.com/faqs_4.htm) is what the Yasmin pill pamphlet says about missed pills:

If you MISS 1 active pill:

* Take it as soon as you remember. Take the next pill at your regular time. This means you may take two pills in one day.
* You do not need to use a backup birth control method if you have sex.

If you MISS 2 active pills in a row in WEEK 1 OR WEEK 2 of your pack:

* Take two pills on the day you remember and two pills the next day.
* Then take one pill a day until you finish the pack.
* You MAY BECOME PREGNANT if you have sex in the 7 days after you miss pills. You MUST use another birth control method (such as condoms or spermicides) as a backup for those 7 days.

If you MISS 3 OR MORE active pills in a row (during the first 3 weeks):

* If you are a Day 1 Starter:
THROW OUT the rest of the pill pack and start a new pack that same day.
If you are a Sunday Starter:
Keep taking 1 pill every day until Sunday. On Sunday, THROW OUT the rest of the pack and start a new pack of pills that same day.
* You may not have your period this month, but this is expected. However, if you miss your period two months in a row, call your doctor or clinic because you might be pregnant.
* You MAY BECOME PREGNANT if you have sex in the 7 days after you miss pills. You MUST use another birth control method (such as condoms or spermicides) as a backup for those 7 days.

meh, sort of. because she may be extending her placebo week beyond 7 days, she would need to use backup if she begins her next pack late.

It sounds like you're basically supposed to "double up" on the pills you missed. You'll be taking two missed pills and the two pills you'd normally take.

but doubling up will not get you (her) protection sooner, and can cause an increase in side effects due to the increased hormone consumption.

Yeah, I was about to post with your suggestion below -- that she just start when she gets them and use backup for 7 days.

Seems a million times easier than trying to play catch up.

Hi! Boyfriend here. She's having me comeent to this since she's confused and "I tend to word questions better." :)

She's confused.

She *just* started her period today. She's got three placebo pills left- tonight, tomorrow, and Saturday, so she'd start her new pack on Sunday.

Since she's on her period now, she shouldn't have to wait 30 days to start her new pack, correct? She should just be able to start them whenever she gets them. It sounds like the FAQ appies to people who forget their pills in the middle of a cycle, and since she's not, she should just be able to start her pills whenever she gets them, and that her period might be a little late/wierd but since she's talking the bc, after 7 days, she'd be protected, yes?

she should restart her pills when she gets them. if that is any day other than sunday, she (& you) needs to use backup protection until she has taken 7 active pills.

say for example, she gets her pack on monday or tuesday.

in the case of monday, she would take sunday's and monday's pill on monday and then continue with one pill as usual. since she is only missing one pill, she doesn't have to use backup.

if she gets her pack on tuesday, then she will take sunday and monday's on tuesday, then on wednesday she will take tuesday's and wednesday's and then continue with one pill as usual. since she missed two pills, she will have to use a backup for 7 days.

however, if she doesn't get her pills until wednesday...then it's a different story. but i think they'd probably get there by monday, which isn't all that big a deal. it's happened to me before (and i'm a sunday start too).

We talked with another friend who has lots of experience with this kind of thing. She says that if my dearheart doesn't get her pills till wednesday, she takes Tuesday's and Wednesdays, and continues as normal starting the next day-- she doesn't have to wait an entire month because she didn't miss pills during a cycle, but rather was just a few days late starting one.

i really dont know how to be more clear. one pill, per day. backup protection if she starts any day other than sunday. this two pills a day thing is only going to waste pills and not get protection any sooner.

well, i've been on hormonal birth control for 5 years. i don't know about your friend, but i'd rather read what the instructions have to say rather than listen to what a friend who might be taking something different says. you could also call a doctor or a clinic like planned parenthood and see what they say.

If your pills did not arrive before Sunday, and you got them Monday, you could take 2 pills then. Then continue taking the pills normally on Tuesday.

If you missed three days in a row, however, you need to scrap your pack and wait until your next period.

she is currently having a period. she would not need to wait 30 days to begin her pills.

Agreed. If it were partway through the month or something like that, then yes. But since she's already on her period and it's the beginning of her cycle, she should be fine.

no, she won't need to wait 30 days. if she did miss three days in a row, then she would take one pill everday until sunday and then she would scrap the pack and start a new pack that day. then you'd have to use back up for a week after the missed pills.

but why would she do that? why would she take a few pills and pitch the pack? presuming she pays for her pills, i cant understand doing that.

all she needs to do is start her pills when she gets them, and if that is any day other than sunday, use backup protection until she has taken 7 active pills. by your method, she's using a whole pack for nothing, and will need to use backup for 2 weeks. i dont understand how that makes sense.

that's what the instructions say to do. if you miss one or two pills in the first week, you can do that. but not three pills on the first week. if you miss more than three pills, it apparently screws the whole cycle up. otherwise, that's what they'd tell you to do.
