When checking ovulation using mucus, why is it that the best time to check is morning? And (usually) how long does your mucus stay stretchy and egg whitey? (*sneark* not yolky. Brain was DEAD)

Oh, also! The whole eating fruits and veggies to make you taste better. How long does it usually take for that to go into effect?

Thank yoou :)

I have no answers, but a community to suggest.

the first is a great question for [livejournal.com profile] fam, which is the "Fertility Awareness Method" group on LJ.

For the second, I imagine it depends on your body. It's deffinitly true, though.

Hmm, I don't know that the morning is the best time to check, for me at least. I practice FAM, and so I check regularly throughout the day. Often, in the morning there will be no cervical fluid, even if there is fertile quality fluid later in the day.

My fluid is egg whitey (not yolky, that would be really gross, lol) for a couple days usually.

Like [livejournal.com profile] oboegoddess, I don't know that morning is the best time to check. I don't remember reading anything about it in any FAM sources, nor do I remember hearing it from anyone. I'd be interested in knowing where you heard this advice so I can read into it further.

What can be important, however, is that you check at a fairly regular time each day. (In other words, if one were to check fluid on Monday morning and then not again until Tuesday evening, that's not really checking each "day," as in, "each 24 hour period.") Making it a part of one's morning routine would help one keep regular records.

Personally, when I relied on FAM for contraception, I checked at least 3 times a day: once in the morning, once around 5pm (about the time I typically got done with classes), and once as I was getting ready for bed. This way, if my body started producing ferile cervical fluid during the day, I'd be likely to notice it before having (or not having) sex that night.

The duration of EWCM varies from woman to woman, and can sometimes even vary from cycle to cycle in the same woman. I typically produce noticeable fertile mucus for 4 to 5 days of my cycle, with most of those days being before I ovulate.

From my FAM research, they do recomend checking cervical fluid multiple times a day (3 maybe?) for the reasons you mentioned. I just make a habit of checking it whenever I'm on the toilet, so it's easier that way.

I check pretty much whenever I'm on the toilet, too. (Even now with my IUD: once you get really used to monitoring cervical mucus, it's really hard to not notice.) But those 3 times a day were the ones I recorded.

Ah I see, I just record once per day, but I record the most fertile quality fluid I found from my checking throughout the day, if that makes sense.

It makes sense.

I recorded the 3 times and then "rated" the day with my most fertile mucus. Since I tend to stop and start seeing eggwhite mucus in the middles of days, having that more detailed record let me be a little more precise as to when I was ovulating.

Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Wechsler says:

"Try to check cervical fluid eveyr time you use the bathroom, doing vaginal contractions called Kegels on the way." She also says to check at least 3x a day and to identify vaginal sensations over the course of the day (eg how "wet" you feel).

I would imagine the taste thing is a gradual thing, the more fruit you eat and for longer then more your taste will change. It would probably take at least a few days to have a noticable effect but even then it wouldn't be quite the same as if you ate lots of fruit every day for weeks or months.

It's not as if you can change your taste immediately for a particular occasion, it's more that having a generally healthy diet with lots of fruit will mean you generally taste better.
