I've heard that it can be true that sisters and mothers living under one roof get their periods around the same time.
Well, that has been proven TRUE for my family because I have 2 sisters and my mom. At the same time every month we would all menstrate.

Anyways, here's my question. I've been on the pill for about 4 years religiously and my youngest sister just started taking hers this past month. We both started on the same Sunday because I'm afraid that if she gets hers a week or two after mine, it'll mess me up because the horomones or feramones in our breathing air would mess my period up.

Well, she ended up getting break through bleeding because she started mid-cycle and now my body is acting like it wants to have break through bleeding. I get cramps, PMS... yadda yadda, but my period is like 2 weeks away.

Is her breakthrough bleeding causing my body to want to have break through bleeding, too?

Don't know the answer to your question, but I've got a similar experience. I'm in college and my roommate along with our suitemates (we share a bathroom) had their periods at the same time as me. Even weirder, my three closest friends and her closest girl friend all got theirs then, too! It's so crazy.

I wish it were true for all women to have their cycles align.

My partner (female) and I are constantly not bleedin at the same time. This means we wont' kill eachoter with PMS, but it also means that we dont' get sex for 10 days out of the month!

Ditto this. I've never synched periods with anyone else, even when:

1) My mom, sister, and I were all menstruating regularly and lived together.

2) I lived closely with multiple women in college.

Oh good, I'm not alone. I was starting to feel like a weirdo. I've never had a synched period in my life.

I don't know for sure, but I would guess that it would be very unlikely that pheromones, or whatever it may be that causes this phenomenon, would be strong enough to counteract the hormones that you take in pill form.

I've always heard that some women are "alpha" women, and people's cycles will align with theirs. I think I must be one, I've had a couple of friends over the years that have said they have irregular periods, yet always seemed to have a period when I did, if we were hanging out a lot.

It is pheremones that cause women to cycle together. I noticed some women saying that they do not cycle with others, that though is rare. Usually there is one dominant woman ('alpha') whose cycle will not change but the others will regulate towards them.

However when on the pill this usually does not occur if both women are on it. It may be possible but unlikely. So maybe this is the case with you both but most doctors would be surprised to hear that you are experiencing a change in your cycle solely due to her. Now if you have never changed your pill, or had a large amount of stress recently (new school year? change in relationship status? moving?) then perhaps that may be causing potential btb and its just poor timeing. I lived with 3 sisters growing up and we never took our pills at the same time and it did not cause a problem. but off the pill and we cycled together (poor dad, 3 girls all menstrating!).

Women won't synch if they're on the pill--it causes them not to secrete the same pheromones or some such thing. I'm not sure exactly how it works, but I remember reading about it in Christiane Northrup's book Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom (which is an excellent book for any woman to read).

I doubt it.

On the subject of why do periods synchronise, however, I found this (http://www.guardian.co.uk/medicine/story/0,11381,1555955,00.html). It's worth scrolling all the way down, past the moon stuff.

You got me curious! Thanks :)

I'm going to say that it's entirely possible that your sister's breakthrough bleeding could make your period come earlier. I have no hard scientific evidence, but I'm on the pill and my mom is on a special hormone cream for menopause. One time when we were still living together, she had a period, which was big news since it was her first one in at least 6 months. I started getting break through bleeding within two days of her period when I was in the middle of my cycle. In theory, your sister shouldn't be able to affect you since you're on the pill, but since you're both getting artificial hormones that might change things.
