sharp pain

i was talking to a friend of mine about a problem i've sort of been having and she suggested i ask all of you.

every once in a while i have this extremely sharp pain in my lower abdomen, in between my left hip and the center of stomach, that lasts about 5-10 seconds and then goes away completely. it doesn't happen very often, i guess probably about once a month. but when it does happen it is EXTREMELY painful, but i've never really thought anything of it until now because it goes away and i forget about it. it's only happened a few times now, but then yesterday morning when it happened it seemed to hurt more than it ever had before. and then later yesterday night when my friend and i were dancing pretty wildly it started to hurt again for probably 20 seconds or so, but not the sharp pain - it was almost like a cramp pain?

does this sound at all familar to anyone? and advice would be appreciated. i'm going to have it checked if it happens again - i just wanted to know if anyone here had expirienced/heard of this at all.

thank you so much!

edit: also i dont know if this could be related but i thought i would just throw it out there - a week or so ago my boyfriend was fingering me and when he went really, really deep i felt a dull, but strong, pain in that same area.

It could be you ovulating. Some women can feel it happen, I can't so I don't know what it feels like but if it happens about once a month on one side of the body it could be that. Does it happen about halfway through your cycle?

I agree, it sounds like mittelschmerz to me.

it sounds like it could be an ovarian cyst. i currently have a cyst and i noticed it because i was having sharp pains in my abdomen and it hurt when i had sex. you should go to the ob/gyn and get it checked out.

occasionally i would have slight pain in my thighs and lower back, some nausea. it was mainly just the pain in my abdomen and the pain during sex (when my bf would go really deep). the pain felt like i was dehydrated, but sharper. and i knew i wasn't dehydrated, so i got checked out and ta-da, it was a cyst.

i have this problem too, but my obgyn doctor refuses to help me out (and i've been living with this for over 6 years now). they think i have endomitrosis(?), but doesn't want to do the test to find out. the way to fix it according to her sice i was young when it started to happen(14) was to do birth control..but honestlyh gaining weight and feeling bitchy isn't worth it to me. the doctor still refuses to do the test and go in and see. i've had ultra sounds done and i have some slight cysts on my ovaries but not where i said the pain was coming from so it wasn' that. it happens worse when i'm going to be on my period and when i am. it hurts right where you said it does. so its a possiblity that you have this too. the best thing to do is go see your doctor and find out. i hope they help you more than they helped me.

Yeah, I second what destiny said... I've had it, too.. my gyno says it's endomitrosis and won't test me for anything. The problem is that with most classically (aka- western tradition) trained doctors... patients don't know what they're talking about. Especially women and "female troubles". A lot of doctors are told that if they can't diagnose a female complaint, then it's the woman making things up. Hope you figure out what's going on!

Ask to be tested for PCOS. I have loads of 5mm cysts on both ovaries, and they cause pain every now and then (i tell them to stop growing and poke the general area). So get checked out. If the doctor won't do it, hold a sit down protest in the surgery until they do! ;) its about time doctors started taking notice of the fact that women know when something's wrong with their reproductive bits.

Maybe then i'll get my hysterectomy!
