i just got back from my yearly exam and i have to say that the gyn for University of Cincinnati's Women's Health Services rocks out. while she was prepping and asking me questions she actually quizzed me on when you should back up the pill! she seemed VERY impressed with the fact that i could tell her three of the four circumstances. also, she quizzed me on how and *when* do to a self breast exam. i like this lady. a lot. just fyi.

and a completely random question - am i just lucky or is it all that unusual that i'm 27 (almost) and i've never had a UTI or a yeast infection? any of you other ladies have that happen?

i'm 27 too, and the closest i've ever had to a YI or a UTI was the one time that i was 12 and i accidentally poured rubbing alcohol all over my crotch, and then subsequently freaked out that i would be sterile, so i scrubbed the crap out of it with soap. red and dry for a few days, but nothing else. we're lucky!

I'm 28 and have never had a YI, but I did have a UTI after being catherized when I gave birth to my son. That was the only time however, and I'm convinced if they didn't do that I wouldn't have had to experience it the first time either!

Feel free not to answer this if it's too personal, but why did you have to be catheterized when you gave birth to your son? Is that something that usually happens?

You can ask pretty much anything - I'm an open book when it comes to 90% of my life. :o}

Anyways, to answer your question, the hospital I delivered at had a standard procedure of catherizing when the "patient" was given an epidural.
I was young and stupid and thought my OB was god so I didn't argue it when everything else was going per my birth plan.

Bleh, that sounds mighty unpleasant. I've heard on here and on other communities about how many doctors do unnecessary things like this and like unnecessary episiotomies (I know some episiotomies really do help things, but I've gotten the impression that most people would be just fine without them), just to make things more convenient for themselves. Ugh. But do let me know if I've gotten the wrong idea -- I hope I have.

Thankfully the only two things I would complain about are the cather and the use of cytotec to help ripen my cervix.

My blood pressure had spiked to 15x/11x and he had me go directly to the hospital for induction, so I didn't have time to read all the bad things that could happen with using cytotec. Thankfully none of those things happened to me, but even with researching it I think I would have allowed that method versus just resigning myself to a c-section since my son was not ready to make his appearance (I was 36 weeks).

The catherization wasn't his call, it was standard hospital practice. I asked about it, but he wasn't willing to go against hospital practice so I figured it wasn't worth the fight.

I didn't have an episiotomy since he didn't believe in doing them, plus on my birth plan I specifically stated I would rather tear. I did end up with two stitches from where I had "minor abrasions" but eh, I can handle that. :o}

Overall I was very impressed with him and wouldn't hesitate to recommend him to anyone - I just should have pushed harder against the hospital to avoid that happening.

I'm 22 and never had a YI or UTI, as far as I know. I actually do remember getting a have-to-pee-all-the-time feeling once or twice when I was little, but it never got bad enough for me to tell my mom about and get taken to the doctor, and it went away on its own.

It happens, sadly not to me. :) I never had a YI until I got on the pill though. As far as the UTI's, I haven't had one of those since I was really young, like 5 or 6.
