I took all you lady's wonderful advice and went and saw the doc about my UTI. I got a perscription (Not cipro) and some uristat. My Rx is called SMZ-TMP and I'm on it for 7 days. I know you're not supposed to have sex with an UTI (Who would WANT to?!) and I'm on birth control. (OTC) I've heard the medications both clash, and you have to wait a couple weeks after the meds are done before the birth control is effective again. Is this true?

I've looked into this myself and read a few research reports that suggest that only certain kinds of antibiotics affect birth control pills. However, most reliable websites advise you to use another form of birth control when you use any antibiotic. I think it's much better to be overcautious than to end up pregnant. I suggest you use a backup method until your next cycle, just in case.

I'd call the doctor or pharmacy & ask if there is an interaction. Some antibiotics don't effect BC, yours may or may not.

If there is an interaction, I believe the gerneral rule is a backup while on the antibiotics, plus 7 days after.

The brand name of your prescription is called Bactrim.. it is most commonly used for UTIs.
