I shaved myself for the first time a few days ago, and yes much to everyones reviews, i really liked the way it felt and looked but the problem, much like everyone elses problem is the razor burn. it is almost like little pimples down there and they are really painful. i waited a few days [five] and then tried to shave again and apparently that was a horrible idea because all those little bumps opened and BLED! what do i do!?!?! i am really scared!
i know i can count on you all for excellent remedies and support,
thanks so much!

Don't be scared. Your skin will get used to being shaved... In the meantime, the best way to deal is to exfoliate daily after showering. I use exfoliating shower gloves and scrub away, its a little uncomfortable, but it totally solves the problem. Good luck!

So do I, and I'm 30. Now I use Bikini Zone after any hair removal, shaving or waxing, and it helps a lot. It suggests applying it several times a day, I usually apply immediately after shaving or waxing, then again a few hours later, and once a day after I shower and pat dry until i need to remove the hair again.

do you still get ingrown hairs? i thought it was mostly for razor burn.

thanks for the info.

Exfoliating daily in the shower keeps the ingrown hairs away. I use Neutrogena Gentle Scrub, the same stuff I use on my face actually. It smells slightly of oranges and I love it.

When you join a new community the best thing to do is immediately read the info page (http://www.livejournal.com/userinfo.bml?user=vaginapagina). :)

I was expecting a bitchy comment from you, on account of your user name, so.. I was pleasantly surprised when you smiled.

Others would disagree, but it's just a nickname. I'm only bitchy to those who really deserve it.

I'm definitely a fan of mine. Not so much anyone else's, but I enjoy giving and receiving good advice, so I stick around.

That's nice. You didn't need to make the comment that it's creepy to be a fan of someone else's vagina.

Ok ok, I'm sorry.. i didn't think of the lesbian thing....
although... i doubt you were a "fan" of her, you probably love her and have an intimate relationship with her...
the word "fan" gave it a creepy conotation... i have nothing against being lesbian and loving your partner's...body. :P

I have shaved myself maybe three times in my life.. the last time I vowed to never do it again. For some reason it was so much more painful last time(even though it was painful and itchy each time, last time was just unbearable). I ended up buying a jar of vaseline and some cheap panties and slathered the stuff on and wore loose clothing for the next week. Kinda..weird, but works wonders.. relives chafing and itching. I actually got this remedy from my childhood.. I don't know how, but occasionally my vulva got chappy when I was little and my mom would put vaseline on me.. I guess it's good for diaper rash too, lol.

You can go stripper-style, and use a deoderant after shaving... just on your mons, in between your thigh/crotch area... it helps tons. Otherwise, use baby powder or some sort of unscented oil...

You can also shave with olive oil. And when you do shave, shave in the shower so your pores open up. Also, shave with the grain.

Woo! Shaving expert. XD

Also, I only shave about once a week, as someone else mentioned. :) It's good to let it grow out occasionally, just enough to have a little more than peach fuzz. You get a cleaner shave when you do finally shave again.

The only place I really get razor burn is on my bikini line (I've been thinking of rubbing crystal deodorant on there to see if it helps). When I shave I use a Mach 3 power razor and Kiss My Face moisture shave. I use lotion afterwards and exfoliate in the shower every day with an exfoliating towelette from The Body Shop. I don't shave that often... maybe once a month because I'm lazy.

Get some Tend Skin, it rules for razor burn. I haven't had razor burn since I started using it.

Seconded. Tend Skin + regular exfoliation = no ingrowns or razor burn for me.

I use conditioner or a super-moisturizing shave gel, and then I put aloe on it afterwards. Also, if your razor's a bit dull, it can hurt like hell. I just got one of those razors with a rotating head, and it makes it a lot easier to get a good shave without ripping up my skin.

I use an electric razor on the entire area and get no ingrown hairs or razor rash. It's just as smooth as a blade without the side effects. May cost a little more in the beginning but I think its worth it!

i thought that leaving a strip down the middle was just the cool thing to do... seeing as a lot of porn chicks do it. I didnt know there was acutal reasoning behind it. lol

LOTS of lotion on the area after you get out of the shower!! It makes everything down there a bit happier and less painful the next day!

I shave everything....sometimes I shave everyday (though, not often because I'm lazy) but I rarely ever go more than 3 days inbetween.

I've had the kind of razor burn that bleeds, and I've used polysporin on it, which helps (as well as makes it heal faster). Though, shaving on a regular basis for a long time has made me used to it, and I don't usually get any kind of irritation from it. I'd urge you to try a variety of methods of shaving. Definetely shave with the grain when you first start. It's definetely not a close shave, but it does help you ease into shaving more easily. Also, try different types of soap/cream/lotion to shave with. Some people like shaving cream, others lotion, and lately people have been talking about olive oil. Personally I use regular soap and that works for me.

Also, if you're going to put a moisturizer on afterwards, I'd suggest trying it out on your freshly shaved legs first, to make sure it doesn't irritate you. (it's more classy to have an itchy leg than to be scratching at your crotch all the time.)

Alright, this was a long comment. I hope it helps. (really though, I think that how people react to shaving is a really personal thing that varies from person to person.)
