I have a question... (If this is in the memories, and I missed it, I'll delete it)

I'm 16, and I went in for my first gyno appointment on the 16th of last month. They were going to put me on Yasmin, but they needed to take my blood because my dad had blood clots. Well they sent me a paper yesterday saying there was something wrong, and to not start the Yasmin.

SO! My question... Does anyone know if they're is any form of BC they can give me that wont raise my blood clot risk?? Please tell me there is??

Thanks, ladies.

im in the same boat...sort of. only its my mom with the history of blood clots.
i havent looked into getting BC yet. but from what i understand, progestin-only forms of BC are okay.

Typically, it's estrogen that raises the risk of blood clots. Estrogen-free methods include all barrier methods (both male and female condoms, diaphragms, lea's shield, cervical cap), all forms of spermicide (jellies, foams, little sheets like those listerine strips), the today sponge, progestin-only pills, the depo-provera shot, and both Mirena and copper IUDs.

That said - it's impossible to know what is wrong without talking to them, so I highly encourage you to do just that.

usually everything BUT combination pills are ok. depoprovera is contraindicated for people with a history of blood clots, but generally other forms of progestin only bc is alright; however, because the window of time they can be taken is much shorter, you need to be very careful with them. as always (unless you are allergic) barrier methods and spermicides can be used, but docs tend not to give IUDs to younger women who have not had children.

as [livejournal.com profile] jennifer0246 said, your best bet is to give your doc a call. find out what they learned from your blood work and ask what you can do about birth control because of those results.
