I was reading my favorite news site, and came upon a link for this story. It is absolutely ridiculous. I think the judge needs to be examined or something.

Click here for the story. Warning: May trigger memories for sexual assault/abuse survivors.

This is just twisted.

Not that I agree with or condone it, but it is a different culture than what most of us here live in.

It upsets me as well. But at least the woman rejected his offer out right, and they are not forcing her to marry him. As others have mentioned, there's probably a lot of cultural issues that I'm not understanding. It just makes me grateful for all the opportunities I have as a woman within the culture I'm in (even if they're not perfect!)

Interesting. I agree about cultural differences, but the fact she wasn't forced to, ad the fact she outwardly said no, gives me some relief. Progress. :)

I'd suggest, if you don't mind, putting a warning that it could be triggering to sexual abuse survivors. Just a heads up for ppl. :)

It happens in some areas of Nigeria, Afghanistan, and possibly Iran and Pakistan- it's been a while since I looked into the subject.

At least the judge didn't force her to marry him, but only suggested she consider it. If he had forced her to marry him, THEN I'd be mad.

in a lot of cultures she would be considered by any potential husbands for ever after the incident as "tainted" and unfit to marry. The fact that the judge merely mentioned it as an option shows that the culture is changing and that it isn't felt quite as strongly in some respects in India, where this occured. Times are a-changing, and I, for one, though I respect the differences in culture, feel that giving women more choice in the matter is heading in the "right" (if there is a right or wrong) direction. More rights for all sides of the human species, imho, is good.

My Indian friend didn't actually believe this story when I just told him about it. India is really that different from here legally.
