in a lot of cultures she would be considered by any potential husbands for ever after the incident as "tainted" and unfit to marry. The fact that the judge merely mentioned it as an option shows that the culture is changing and that it isn't felt quite as strongly in some respects in India, where this occured. Times are a-changing, and I, for one, though I respect the differences in culture, feel that giving women more choice in the matter is heading in the "right" (if there is a right or wrong) direction. More rights for all sides of the human species, imho, is good.
