i have been experiencing some itching right outside the vaginal opening, not on the labia anywhere, but just on the inside, without going "inside".

does anyone know what this could be a symptom of?

idd go with allergic reaction.
if i dont wash new undies 3 times
i get severe inflamation in that approxamate area from the sizing and formadehyde and such.
so if they are new, that might be it
or you might be developing an allergy to your detergent
or if you just switched brands you are allergic to the new one.
or it might be something completely different...but im no doctor! ;)

It might just be contact dermatitis caused by chafing from clothes, etc. Just keep an eye on it.
