Howdy. So last week I was prescribed an antibiotic to help clear up some stubborn acne, and now my vagina's a bit weird. The antibiotic in question is called Minocycline, and I was directed to take two 100mg capsules per day. I took two pills last Wednesday, but the side effects I experienced were quite bad (extreme dizziness, nausea, unsteadiness = can't walk too well) and so I stopped taking the antibiotics after that first day. Ever since then, my vagina's been different-- I've been getting more discharge than normal, it's a little thicker, and the color has changed as well, it's light yellow with some brown. I had a physical and a Pap last Tuesday, and so I thought perhaps the discharge had something to do with that. Also, my vagina smells more... vagina-y. Normally I don't notice any smell at all, but over the past few days I've noticed that I can actually smell it. It doesn't smell fishy or bready or anything, it smells like my vagina normally smells, only amplified. If that makes any sense. I'm not itchy or anything, so I don't think it's a yeast infection (if it is, then it's nothing like any yeast infection I've had before). If it doesn't clear up in a few days, I'll try and contact my doctor about it. I work 7:30am-5:30pm and my doctor's office is only open 8:30-5 and I can't call during work, so my only hope of getting ahold of my doctor is if I get off work early. So this is why I'm posting here now, just to see what you all think. I'm not very worried about this, just curious as to what's up with my body. Thanks in advance for your comments and advice.

even though you said that you had no itching, it still sounds like you might have a yeast infection. i also think that because you took antibiotics, and antibiotics can cause yeast infections

I was on Minocylene. I say was because I was then taken off of the medication because of the amount of yeast infections it had caused. Even though you lack itching - I'd bet that it was a yeast infection.

Ditto with the yeast infection theory. If you're seeing improvement in your skin and you're not experiencing any discomfort "down there" than keep taking the medication. If the discharge is bothering you and a wearing a panty liner doesn't make you feel cleaner, you'll probably want to take some acidophilus (http://aolsvc.health.webmd.aol.com/hw/drug_data/d03644a1.asp?bn=Acidophilus) or start on a yogurt or garlic treatment. If you have any concerns, it's always best to check with your doctor, but yeast infections are a very common side effect to anitbiotics (and one that doctors fail to remind their female patients of).

Hope you feel better soon!

I'm not sure about the aci. and being vegan thing. My guess is that it probably occurs naturally from other sources besides dairy products? Using an otc yeast infection treatment cream might not be the best idea because I think that while you're treating the symptoms of the infection with the cream, and killing yeasts...the same medicine that's causing them is still going to be entering your body on a daily basis, so you'll keep giving yourself the yeasties, whereas using the aci. I think counteracts the agents that cause yeast infections. This might be one of those things you'll want to call your gp about. If you find out, definitely post it to the community! I'd like to know!
