If I'm on OTC-Lo, and I take it properly, but have sex w/o a backup method during my fertile period, and I have been having diarrhea sporadically - should I be worried about pregnancy?

This did not occur to me until after the fact, unfortunately.

I apologize if this is off-topic; feel free to delete it. I am just concerned about this, and everyone here is so knowledgeable.

I'm on OTC-Lo as well. I've never had sex without a backup during my fertile period, but my doctor did tell me that the sign most seen of pregnancy while on BC is thick, pink discharge. Not just pink and not just thick, but pink and thick. I'm not sure, but I don't believe diarrhea becomes a pregnancy symptom until months into gestation anyway. And you would've noticed if you'd missed a period.

You could just be sick. But having diarrhea could mean the pill came right back out before it metabolized, so you should definitely use a backup method.

Hope this is helpful.

Ohh, sorry. I can be thick.
Using a backup is a great thing, but not using it isn't insant pregnancy. You shouldn't worry too much.

I think she meant, should she be worried she could be pregnant. I highly doubt it, cause I've taken pills late before, had diarhea, etc etc and dont use a backup method... and Ive never had an issue. Perhaps it depends on how long youve been on BC for... ive been on mine 4 years or a little more.

For the most part, I wouldnt worry about it...

If you're taking your pills every day, you don't have a fertile time period. The pills prevent ovulation – you are equally protected all month. There's a packet of information that comes with the birth control pills that explains how they work and how to prevent pregnancy.

when i asked my gyno before when in a similar situation, she said it depends on how much diarrhea. definite "sporadically."

i agree with this. if you're having diarrhea every couple of days, then don't sweat it. if it's daily, then it might be more of a problem. it would also be a sign that you need to visit your doctor about the diarrhea.

does the diarrhea occur before your period? diarrhea is caused by dehydration so it may have something to do with the time of the month for you.

It's actually the other way around, diarrhea can lead to dehydration. You are right in the fact some ladies tend to get diarrhea around their period, though.
