Hullo. I'm obviously new to this community. I'm 14 and I've been menstruating since I was 11.

I awoke this morning at approximately 4:30 with a terribly bleedy feeling, knowing that I had started my period (after waiting for three weeks!). I went downstairs with a terriblely nauseating stomachache that ensued until I sat down at the kitchen table with water, Midol, and anti-nausea medicine before me. It felt as if I were pouring blood, but it ended up being a few patches instead. Now it feels as if it's stopped completely. Any specific reason for this, or is it the average patchy period?

I'm sure I've been PMSing for over a week, and I had been waiting for longer than two weeks for the bleedin' to start, but it didn't.

Also, I'm curious to know why it's normal to experience crapping-out-the-guts (diahrrea) during a period.

Thanks.

I think most people have heavy and light days with their period. I know some mornings it feels like Niagara Falls down there but usually is never as bad as it feels.

As for the diarrhoea - lovely little molecules called prostaglandins are busy making your uterine muscles contract to expel the lining, and those molecules inevitably get to other places as well and make most of the muscles in that general area start to contract and squeeze, so your bladder and bowel tend to go haywire at the same time.

diahrrea . . . sucks. Tends to happen to me more than I'd like. It's relatively new for me but yeah it seems to be common.

My understanding is that right around the time you are getting ready to start a period, your body produces "prostaglandins." They are part of the natural inflammation process when you have a cut, swelling during an injury, and are sometimes the cause of headaches. One of the effects of prostaglandins can be irritation of the bowel, and diarrhea.

hey, thanks for asking *why* it's normal. i didn't realise it was and instead thought a monthly case of ass-explodey was one of those fun things i inherited from mom. :)
