Hey. I hope these help. The New Zeland HPV Project (http://www.hpv.org.nz/) The U of Iowa's Health Care Page about HPV (http://obgyn.uihc.uiowa.edu/Patinfo/Adhealth/HPV.HTM) American Social Health Association's HPV info page (http://www.ashastd.org/stdfaqs/hpv.html)
HPV is a general name for a whole bunch of viruses-only some of them cause genital warts, and only some have been linked with cervical cancer. They can take anywhere from three weeks to about six months to develop after exposure and can appear on the vulva, cervix, inside the vagina, in the anus and so on. They're small hard bumps, that are often hard to see, and may develop a cauliflower-like appearance.
Treatment can involve medication, cutting, burning or freezing the warts off.
Because it's a viral infection, it's possible to treat the symptoms but not the cure. The virus is spread by direct contact with the wart, but may also be spread by skin to skin contact if viral shedding is occuring. (Basically, when a wart isn't present, if someone is on the verge of an outbreak, the virus may be present on the skin, even if there's no wart there.)
(All my stats, and my really good STD book are at work, so I'm sorry I can't be more helpful, but if you want, I can e-mail you more information next week, when I'm in my office. I'm a big fan of keeping a copy of Our Bodies, Ourselves around the house for other resources though-even if I do need to replace my copy with the updated edition soon.)
I think the other people have the technical info covered. So I'll just tell you that I have it, as do most of my friends, and if you have any q's about the living-with-it aspects, feel free to ask.
yeah, I was just diagnosed with it and I'm devistated. How do you deal with it? How do you tell your partner about it? I told my boyfriend and I don't think we'll ever have sex b/c of it. He's still with me, but I think he's a little freaked out about it.
