I just read on birthcontrol.com that the today sponge is back on the the market, but only in Canada. I wonder if this means you can order on the net? I've never used one, but i heard they are pretty effective and i really want to get off of the pill because i have tried 3 differant brands and they all irritate my system. I'd like to hear from any of you who have used the today sponge and whether or not it is a good thing.

Lets just say that the episode of Seinfeld where Elaine was hoarding sponges and judging guys to see if they were 'spongeworthy' really hit home, and if I could get the sponge I would actually put off the tubal I was planning this summer.

Wow, I'll have to look into this. I just went off the pill because it basically made me nuts, I just can't handle it. Are they available over the counter, or from the doctor? I don't really know much about them, but I've been looking for a new method of birth control & have been seriously thinking of gettinga tubal ligation. I'm in Canada, so if they're just OTC I'll get one tomorrow!

The sponge rubbed something the wrong way with me and set up a muscle cramp like you wouldn't believe. Which included clamping up so tight we couldn't effectively ENJOY it. The texture also tweaked out his cock head, but he was fairly long. Someone who doesn't bottom out might not have that issue. The smell disgusted me, I really don't know why.

BLEH!

So I tried them about 3 times and gave it a miss. But I hear other people swear by them.

What I heard about the demise of Today Sponge had to do with women who had difficulty removing them; the little finger loop broke fairly readily and every Monday clinics all over the United States had a woman or two in line waiting to get the sponge removed since they couldn't do it themselves.

Of course, the United States being what it is, I think that this led to a number of lawsuits.

Anyway, that's my dim memory of what I was told by a woman from Planned Parenthood who trained me as a contraceptive options counselor.

I'm impressed and pleased that they're back on the market, though since I have a sensitivity to nonoxynol-9, I doubt that it would be a good option for me if I ever stop the pill.

There is a contraceptive sponge available from http://www.birthcontrol.com, but it is not the Today sponge. It is a brand called Protectaid, and it is supposed to be very similar to the Today sponge. Yes, it is over the counter: you just give them a credit card number and they send it to you. I have not used it, but I have used birthcontrol.com in the past, and they are wonderful. It really bothers me that Oves and Lea's Shields are available in Canada but not here. (I know Lea's is supposed to be approved in the US soon, but it may be prescription only here, which defeats the whole purpose.)
