clotty periods

Hi,
(Sorry if this has been asked before.)
The past 5 or so periods of mine have been really clotty. They're big too... usually a few 1 inch x .25 inch clots a day. About 4 or 5 days of just thick dark clots that seem to build up behind my tampon. It's so ANNOYING. It makes my tampons kind of... slip, or something. I have to change them a lot more often... and when I do they're only half soaked.
I'm 22 years old. I've been taking a generic version of Desogen (I get it really cheap through my university, so I'd rather not switch) for about 2 years now. My cycle used to be really irregular and crampy... but since I started the pill it seems to have settled at right around 28 days and it's not as painful. I have this dark sticky light period for 2 days then as I said, several days of clots.
Any advice? Words of sympathy?
I feel like my GYN will just try and switch me to a different, more expensive pill. I'm not really sure paying $30 more a month is worth it. If there might be some sort of underlying problem though, I'll make an appointment. I'd heard this is normal though....
