After years of discussion with numerous health care providers, a miscarriage and more bloodwork than I care to think about, I've finally been diagnosed with
PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome.)
The doctor I saw yesterday (who works with the midwife I get my routine gyn care from) suggested that along with metformin, I should go off the pill. Effectively what he said was that some women with PCOS find they have a better metabolic response to the metformin when they're not on the pill, and that because I have the variety of PCOS that includes cysts, and the pill isn't suppressing them as well as he'd like, I should go off the pill. We did briefly discuss other contraceptive methods, though nothing long term, because the ultimate goal is to try and get pregnant within three to six months. Among the contraceptive options he suggested were condoms, withdrawl, "the rhythm method"-basically anything I wanted that wasn't hormonal or long term.
He did ask for very careful cycle monitoring, to see if ovulation returns with the use of the metformin, and suggested the use of an OPK (ovulation predictor kit) in addition to monitoring BBT and cervical mucous. I've looked at the reviews at peeonastick.com, and I'm still undecided about whether it makes sense to spend the money on the Clearblue Fertility Monitor (the reuseable monitor that you need to buy test sticks for,) or the other, disposeable variety. Does anyone have experience with OPKs, and could talk to me more about what the experience has been like, and what the preferences are? I'm leaning towards Clearblue or Persona, only because I think getting accurate readings might be easier, but it's almost $200 US, and before I spend that kind of money, I think it requires some thought and investigation.
Any other feedback from people here with PCOS would also be appreciated. I'm quite glad to finally have the diagnosis and to treat it.
