So, I decide to go to my first gyno appointment (I'm 19) over my winter break from school. So I go on Monday. They won't see me because my insurance group doesn't cover them. So my mom and I find another doctor who is covered by my insurance group. The appointment was this morning. I go...turns out that the doctor had a family emergency and couldn't see anyone today. And I'm leving for school tomorrow and won't be back till March!

Now, the P.S. I was debating losing my virginity to my boyfriend, but we both want me to be on the pill first. This makes it a bit harder. Who doesn't want me to see a gyno??

I think you should find a gyno in your area at school, that way you don't have to wait until March and you can cross that off your "to-do before losing virginity" list.

If you're in college you might try your school health center and see if they offer gyno services, most colleges do. Otherwise, make sure you use a condom, and see a gyno as soon as you can after you start having sex. It's better to do it before, but just make sure you do it either way.

Not going to the gynocologist shouldn't stop you from having sex, if you're ready--but just be sure you use a condom every time until you've been on the pill for at least a month. Your doctor may tell you longer, so follow his or her directions once you finally go.

And if your boyfriend has been sexually active, please please please make sure he gets tested. The boy I lost my virginity to gave me HPV, so I speak from (unfortunate) experience.

OR even the health department in your town my offer gyn services. Possibly even low cost or free pill supply, as well. I know the Health Department in MY town does . . .

Good luck!

you don't have do go to a gyno to get on the pill. i had an appointment with my regular doctor this week and she gave me a prescription. i agree with whomever said you should go to your school's student health services. almost all colleges have medical staff who can give exams and prescribe the pill. i was going to go through my school to get it, but they required that everyone going on the pill attend a 2 hour seminar that went over information on sexual health and it conflicted with my classes!

I went to CSULA, and if your school's anywhere near the same, the health center is great (and cheap too!). You might be able to get the pills cheaper too. :)
I'd recommend seeing a gyno...it's not mandatory, if you can get a script with out it, but it's always a good feeling to get a clean bill of health.
(btw, mind if I add you? I'm in Cali too, and we seem to have some things in common. :) )

Like someone up there said, if everything is normal you don't need to go to a gynecologist. My GP does all my Pap smears, STD tests, nasty-yeast-infection cultures, and pill prescriptions, and is more careful and thorough about it than my last gyno. (Who was pretty good, actually; but I'm small, so even the smallest speculum can be painful if not done exactly right.) The only reason I would find a new gynecologist would be if I were having some sort of problem or if I got pregnant (well, that would be an obstetrician, but you know what I mean).

Find a gynocologist that you feel comfortable not just anyone. Also, you could try Planned Parenthood, good for a students budget and usually easy to find one.

Please use a condom. And pills can be dangerous to your health so research them too.

Have fuN!

I'd think twice before starting to have regular sex with just a condom. They take time to learn how to use, and obviously are not as reliable if you aren't a skilled user.

don't do anything unless you are comfortable with it and are willing to accept the potential risks involved
if that means not having sex until you get on the pill because you don't trust condoms to be reliable enough for you, then don't have sex
waiting can be frustrating, but if it's not something you're ready for (where ready includes both emotional/psychologically ready as well as physically ready with birth control and/or condoms), you probably will be better off and happier waiting until you are ready

if you decide you want to see a gyno before you have sex, most schools have women's clinics or something similar
the one at my school has been wonderful, and while it may be someone you aren't familiar with, chances are, they'll be perfectly good for what you want from them
that way, you don't have to wait till march (:

I'm going for my first gyno visit the 23rd at my University's health clinic. I have school insurance, so I'm covered. But as far as pills are concerned, I have to shell out $15/month, which I hear isn't that bad.

So, surely, call up your University's women's center and inquire.
