This is in response to Joannie's post about shaving: one of the best peices of advice I have ever gotten about avoiding razer burn came from a young Polish girl who used to do my waxing when I lived in NYC. It was as follows: "the reason you get razor burn is because sweat and dirt get in the hair foliciles and they create a build up causing pimple-like bumps and inhibiting hair growth. If it is a major problem, you could buy expensive stuff- we have some things here- or you could make a solution of 1 part rubbing alchol, 9 parts water and very carefully apply it in the morning with a cotten ball and after you work out or go swimming. And no moisturizers for the next day or so (keep in mind, this was waxing here, so after a day or so the hair foliciles which would sometimes be bleeding had time to close up a bit)!"
Also, I have noticed that if I use baby oil before I get in the shower it softens the skin enough to get a bit of a better shave....

i think all those things would be applicable to shaving as well. i seem to recall reading somewhere that lavendar oil is also beneficial if applied before hair removal.

Date: 2002-04-18 05:48 pm (UTC)you'll actually find that you get ingrown hairs even without hair removal, you just don't notice them because of the rest of the fuzz. there are creams/lotions you can buy that purportedly get rid of ingrown hairs. i've never tried any though, so i can't comment on their effectiveness.
