Hi VP superstars. I apologize if this has been posted before, but I didn't see it in the tag yesterday. My long-distance partner is coming to visit next Wednesday. My period was supposed to start on Sunday, but no sign of it yet. I took two early detection pregnancy tests and no dice (it would be extremely unlikely because I have a copper IUD and the last time we had sex was the last day of my period, so several days before ovulation). I would really like to induce my period so that it's gone by the time he comes so we can enjoy sexytimes and I won't feel miserable otherwise, but due to stress (moving to a new town, starting an internship, and being away from my partner) I think it's planning on being several days late! So I'm wondering if there's a sure-fire way I can make the sucker start tomorrow. I have been having PMS-like symptoms all week but no colored discharge or anything. I thought I detected mild cramps but apparently not. I have the mini pill (microgestin) available as it was what I used for BC before I got the IUD, as well as two doses of Plan B. If I took either a large dose of the mini-pill today or the Plan B, do you think it would start it, and if so how soon? Any other remedies to recommend? I really don't want to be on my heaviest days while he's here! Thanks so much!

I would try a combination of parsley tea (the fresher the better, the stuff sitting in your spice cabinet has long lost its essential oils) and vitamin C. Both are known to bring on a period, and you really can't overdose on either. Add honey to the tea if you can't stand the taste, it won't change its affect, and I would aim for 3-5 grams of vitamin C a day (water soluble vitamin, so the worst thing that would happen is a tummy upset/your pee turns brown).

As far as taking the plan B/birth control, I'm under the impression that they would delay the period? I certainly don't know how you could use them to start your period tomorrow.

I second the parsley tea idea. It worked for me! You can even stick some fresh parsley inside your vagina as a pessary to bring on a period even faster (careful with the stems!). Hormonal birth control affects different people differently, and sometimes the same person will react differently at a different time. I've taken Plan B a few times and sometimes my period came right away while other times it came much later than normal.

Just re-read and noticed you have an IUD; not sure if a pessary is a great idea in that case.

i second the vitamin c.

when i wasn't sure if i were pregnant or not and i was about a day late, i was looking up ways to induce a period without harming a potential pregnancy. i read a recommendation of 6-10 grams of vitamin c on one day, and 3-5 grams on the next day and that should do the trick (plus give you an upset stomach, but that is gone once the excess vitamin c has left your body).

for me, it turned out i was in fact pregnant, and it didn't do any harm. i have since induced my period once with that method, for similar reasons as OP's, and it worked quite efficiently.

This is not totally helpful, but as far as I know, Microgestin is not a minipill. It's a regular combined pill. http://www.drugs.com/cdi/microgestin-fe-1-20.html

If you tried inducing your period with hormones, it would probably take a few days.
