Thanks for the help on my previous post here. I tried the pink dye tests like someone suggested and that came out negative as well. Then I went and got a test at Planned Parenthood just to be sure (49 days is the longest I've gone without a period, so I was kinda freaking out) and that came out negative as well, but since I was there, I had them check the strings on my IUD... Turns out it had partially expelled, so they had to take it out. Boo. :(

I'm kinda nervous about it not working the second time... I had a blood clot in the past from birth control pills, so I don't really have many non-hormonal contraceptive options left that aren't annoying (condoms are so bleh).

So now my question is, has anyone had an expelled/partially expelled IUD? Did you have a new one put in later? Did that one stay?

Glad you were able to get some peace of mind about the pregnancy test. Super bummer about the IUD expelling! Good thing they found it though.

Have you considered Implanon? It's not non-hormonal, but it's progestin-only, so should be safe for your history of blood clot, and because it's not intrauterine it can't expel.

Depending on your resources, there are smaller IUDs available outside of the US (e.g. the Flexi-T 300 and the Gynefix). If that's not an option, many people have had success with a second IUD after an expulsion, just ensure you have a highly experienced practitioner inserting the device!

iud_divas has lost of great stories and resources you may find useful!

I have had a copper IUD for 6.5 years and it is awesome!
My friend had one expelled, then a second one placed and it has been in for a few years now!

The only issue we had is that my partner could feel the strings for the first year, and it was too rough against his head so we just didn't penetrate as deep,
But after awhile they soften up and he can't even tell they are there!!! I love it when he hits my cervix so I am super glad that it is un detectable now!

I have heard that if you have the strings trimmed, that they can feel sharp and poke his head! So leave the strings long, they will soften up after awhile!

The strings tend to curl up around the cervix either way... I personally wouldn't leave them too long,
But I use a DIVA cup during my period, and I wouldn't want the strings to get stuck between the wall of my vagina, and the menstrual cup...

If you check for the cervix/string in the middle of your cycle when you are ovulating, the cervix Sita lower, you can also bare down alittle and it will push the cervix down closer to your opening..

Happy string hunting!

I completely expelled my first IUD (Paragard) after about 5 months. I had a second one put in and I've had that one now for about 3 years with no problems whatsoever.

I expelled my first IUD within about 10 days of it being first inserted. I had a new one immediately re-inserted, and it's been happily in place for about 4 months! I have high hopes for it to remain in my uterus until 2017...
