So I lost my virginity yesterday. He was inside me all the way, and there was no pain or blood like I said before. But today I looked down there, and it looks exactly the same. It still feels tight where two fingers is all I can fit. SO my question to you is, my hymen did break when we had sex, right? (I also had a partial hymenectomy in october, if it means anything)

I think more often than not it stretches, rather than breaks. No pain or blood doesn't necessarily mean much either! That can mean that your body was sufficiently lubricated, and you were ready physically and emotionally (not that pain means the opposite, but the association between first PIV and pain is really...engrained.)

Also, great page on hymens: http://www.scarleteen.com/article/body/my_corona_the_anatomy_formerly_known_as_the_hymen_the_myths_that_surround_it

or shall I say, "hymens."

It's really fascinating. I'm sad I didn't know about it until now! I've had some specific issues I wish I could have looked up (like not being able to wear tampons until after I had sex for the first couple of times) and this site seems to address all of that. I wish this stuff was more readily accessible to younger people. I mean yes, they use the internet now like younger people didn't in the past, but they're not geared towards sites like this at all. Makes me sad and wonder how one goes about making sites like these more accessible to teens, etc.

Ugh, really. It should be an officially recommended site or something. I'm using it now to work on having better sexual/romantic relationships, and have used it in the past for birth control info etc. Also, the work on behalf of young people has, imo, made me a better person. Adultism is not awesome!

Thanks for that site!! It's great! I realize now that the blood from my first PIV sex was probably more from enthusiastic, athletic sex than from the actual "breaking" of anything. It still happens to me, almost 20 years after I started having sex.

mine was probably due to lack of lubrication, but even then it wasn't bad at all

My hymen has looked the same since I was 8 and first started poking around there with a mirror. (It looks like a scrunchie!) No amount of penis, fingers, toys, vegetables, etc have altered it. Like sweetchild92 says, it doesn't always "break" but often simply stretches, if you had one in the first place.

I have a friend who has been married for years and has a septate hymen, and she and her sweetie just move it aside.

I didn't hurt or really bleed from my hymen my first time, but I tore externally because I'm just built tiny. Nothing felt differently when I checked with my fingers afterward and nothing's changed in the 11 years I've been having intercourse. It happens. *shrug*

I didn't bleed until the second time I had sex. Also, a lot of women have their hymen broken before they ever have sex. Just by natural every day things. Also, your hymen might have been really thin. Or non-existent to begin with. Don't go by blood, etc.

ETA: The link above is awesome, I just read it after posting my comment. I should always look at previous comments first!

Well, if it means anything to you, I've been having sex for about 7 years now and still have part of my hymen.

I didn't know that's what it was until recently. I just thought that's how I looked down there.

I've heard that it doesn't go away completely for many women until childbirth.

I've been having sex for 5+ years with several different people and I don't recall ever bleeding during sex. Your hymen probably just stretched rather than breaking, which is perfectly fine. Many people's don't break unless they give birth vaginally.

I didn't have pain or bleeding when I first had sex, haven't ever since then either. Like some other commenters I also have a part of my hymen left.

I didn't bleed the first time, or any time actually. Except that one time my period started up at an inopportune moment, but I don't think that one counts.

First time hurt a bit, not nearly as much as I expected from what people had told me, I probably wouldn't even have noticed if I wasn't expecting pain. Most likely I was just a bit tense or dry. It was much more painful trying to have sex without added lubrication when I was on decongestants for a cold! I found out later that decongestants dry up ALL mucous membranes indiscriminately.
