Random hip growth?

I'm 17 and have had huge hips since I was 13. I used to be able to get into a size 8 or so, but I've gone up two pants sizes this year. Admittedly, I did gain a bit of weight back after losing about 25 pounds (though really, only about five pounds or so- only enough for one pant size) but the only thing I can attribute to the other rise in size is my hips, since I take an XL in just skirts, but still get away with a large or medium with dresses. Really- I weigh about 135 now, and can't fit into the slacks I wore two years ago, when I weighed 155.

I thought getting your period was the end of any sexual growth? I got it when I was 13 1/2, but my hips apparently jutted out more just this year.

Not really vagina-related, but I was wondering if anyone had any insight. Jeans are kind of expensive, and I'm emptying my wallet slowly replacing all my old pairs...

I've been told that it's not unheard of to keep growing into your early 20s, and that there's often a secondary growth spurt at the end of puberty. 17 is still fairly young and your body is probably still settling down. I had a growth spurt as late as 21 - gained a cup size and an inch of height!

I'm 20 and have just gone from a large A to a small C, and my hips have widened a bit as well. I hate to break this to you, but you'll never really know when it's "done" because it's different for everyone.

I got my first period a little late, around 17, and just had a huge hip growth spurt this past year. I'm 24 now. My hips have grown about 4" in the past year or so, so I feel your pain on replacing jeans.

Sexual growth can continue into the 20s. Mine did - my boobs grew a cup size.
For most girls, getting their period is only the beginning of their sexual growth.

You're 17, that's what happens at that age. Your body is going to keep changing for a while.

yeah, hips and boobs will keep growing, usually until and through the early 20s, and then again during and immediately after a pregnancy.

just echoing the others, my hips grew in my early twenties. Hopefully replacing clothes won't be too much of a hassle for you!

My body fat distribution patterns kept changing until I was well into my twenties. I've more boobs and hips now at 30 than I had at 20, for whatever reason. Or maybe I have less waist? Stuff happens, I reason it's all good. :-)

I got my first period when I was ten years old and still looked completely like a child, so no, it's definitely not the end of growth. My basic body type didn't settle down until I was fifteen or so and there's some physical changes that continue to this day, though it's not growth anymore. For instance, the skin problems I've dealt with for my entire puberty have only fully cleared up over the last few months...

Echoing everyone else; you can keep growing into your 20s.

I know what it's like to have big hips. Mine are 51 inches. D: Haha, if I ever have a kid, they'll be able to walk out, nevermind labor.

I always buy my pants at thrift stores. I haven't paid more than $20 for a pair in about eight years. The average I pay is $10-$15/pair.

I got my period when I was 10 or 11. I'm almost 20 now. Up until a year and a half ago, I was about a size 9/10. Right now I'm a 15. I seriously had no idea why, because I hadn't gained weight, aside from the 5-10 pound range I would go back and forth between. It's so nice to hear that other people have had this happen to them! And plus, I felt like going up 5 sizes... I think I'd need to gain more than 30 pounds for that to happen, and when I gain weight it goes everywhere, not just my waist! It does suck, though, ugh. I hate it because I'm always looking for new pants. :\

OP- We're given the message that we change around menarche and that nothing else happens until menopause. Oh if only!

Your hormones shift and change throughout your adult life. Most of the time the changes are so subtle that you don't notice, but there are occasional shifts so big that you literally wake up one day and think "Um. Whose hips are these?" or "Where did this boobage come from?".

Ditto!! I've been wide hipped since I can remember, and every day at work (where I've worked for 7 years) I slam into the same counters, as if I'm not aware how wide I am....some day I'll learn :o)

Thanks for everyone's input. I must've read the bit about growth ending at puberty in a book some time ago... Good to know I'm not the only one still shelling out for new pants.
