SO, i moved to LA from massachusetts in septemeber in hopes of finding a job after college.
well i just found one. so i dont have insurance and my parents insurance doesnt cover me out here.
my doctor is massachusetts will not write me another RX for birth control (apri) without seeing me. which i obviously cant do. i cant go to a doctor out here because i dont have insurance- my new job will give me insurance but not until septemeber.
i have no more refills left.
i was wondering if i went to planned parenthood do they just give you whatever birthcontrol brand they have on hand or would they be able to write me an RX for Apri because i do NOT want to switch brands. ive been on the same one for years...

thanks for the help!!

If you want to get your HBC from Planned Parenthood, you're probably restricted to what they have available. If you want to get your prescription there, and fill it at a different pharmacy, knowing that they can't help you with the price at all in that circumstance, then they should be able to do that.

But you'll have to pay full price, basically, if you don't get it from them. (Depending on the PP and its local funding, you may or may not get a price break anyway. They all want to give price breaks, but they don't necessarily have the funds to do so.)

If you're okay with definitely paying full price, then just ask them for a prescription for Apri to be written, so you can take it to a pharmacy to fill it. Tell them you know that you'll have to pay full price that way (unless Apri is a brand they can provide). Only a terribly dense doctor would be unwilling to do that.

You might also be able to get your doctor to give you a prescription "Till September" if you explain that you've, y'know, moved across the country and don't have local insurance yet. (If not, then you may be well-rid of that doctor!)

Worst comes to worst, you can go on something else till September and go back to Apri when you have insurance, though!

Good luck!

Since you're in California I would look into Family Pact. It's a program only in Cali that provides low cost birth control for people who don't have health insurance or whose health insurance doesn't cover BC. From the way it's described here: http://www.familypact.org/en/Clients/what-is-family-pact.aspx It seems there are providers who participate in it even outside of Planned Parenthood, although PP still might be a good place to start.

To better answer your question: They can write you a prescription for Apri even if they don't have it on hand, you just might not be able to get it at a discounted price through the PP pharmacy. (Although it seems if you're eligible for Family Pact, you'd get it for free regardless)

Seconding this. Family Pact is awesome and I haven't had to pay for my birth control for the past two years! Never had a problem filling the Rx at pharmacies either, because pretty much everyone takes it. I enrolled at my college but you can definitely enroll at Planned Parenthood.

I had the same issue when I was too old for my parents' insurance. I had gotten a certain birth control for a while and didn't want to change. While I was going to school, I got my birth control prescriptions for Yasmin from PP and was able to get them for free because I wasn't making enough money. However, when I moved to AZ, the PP was different and the only free birth control they would give me was what they had in the office. If I got a script for Yasmin, I would have to pay for it. So, the point is that every Planned Parenthood is different based on their funding and you'd have to ask them what they would be willing to do for you. You might have to pay for your preferred birth control.

I just recently went to Planned Parenthood to get back on HBC (at the end of April / I also have no insurance, so this was my best option). I was previously on Yaz and wanted to go back on it. They did not offer Yaz for a discounted rate at the location I went to, but they were more than willing to write up a prescription for Yaz BUT I would have to pay the full price for it at my pharmacy (I think it was $96 per month, ouch). They did offer Yasmin at their discounted $15/month rate. I hope this helps!
