Hello everyone,

Here's an interesting question that my boyfriend had last weekend. He is very fond of my nipples, well, he's fond of everything, really. But last weekend he was sucking on them and paying with them quite a bit. At one point, however he drew back and told me they were salty. I thought he was just imagining things, but eventually he proved it to me by playing with them some more and suceeding in drawing a tiny droplet of clear liquid. Apparently this persisted the entire weekend. He said it was slightly less salty than sweat, and I doubt sweat actually comes out of the nipple itself. So, what is that stuff? Is he actually, like I've been joking, causing me to lactate by playing with the girls too much?

Just curious.

Thank you in advance!

Well for one thing, breast milk is sweet, not salty :D

Clear fluid depending on time of the month is ok..if it's copious amounts or an off color, I'd ask your doc about it. I was once oozing a little milky fluid yrs after I stopped nursing, and my doc made sure to do a test to check my pituitary gland....sometimes a tumor or abnormality there can cause this to happen.

But my gland was fine and she chalked it up to hormone changes.

Are you taking any medications? One medication is was taking made me lactate quite frequently, but it was more than just a drop..my shirt would be soaked through.

It's happened to me and my gf too. The first time it happened I got a bit of a shock, boobs aren't supposed to taste of stuff! Then as I was getting used to that, and getting on with generally being me, we were shagging one night and she went "UGH! What's THAT? Your boobs are SALTY!". Haha revenge is mine! So now we both lactate, which is beyond funny. In my case I take domperidone, a medication to control my vomiting. It's also well known for causing leaky boobs to the point that some women use it if they have difficulty establishing a milk supply. So all I have to do is look at a picture of something cute and I leak!

Playing with the nipples and breasts cause prolactin hormones to be elevated. Prolactin is, well, "pro-lactation" -- it causes milk to be produced! So, yes, it's entirely possible that he managed to play with them enough to stimulate the milk glands (which are modified sweat glands!) into producing a little fluid.

This is pretty normal!

Now, how do I know about this prolactin stuff? I can, any old time, express green fluid from my breasts. (This happened before I was pregnant, not during, and after.) When sent to the endo, I demonstrated my Martian heritage and she got me a slip to get a blood test to check my prolactin levels. "But", she said, "don't do it right away -- you've been stimulating your breasts, and that will cause your prolactin levels to be elevated. Give it a few days."

(As it happens, "green" is normally abnormal, no one knows quite why (she pronounced me half-Martian and I went YAY!), but it's harmless.)

Yeah, I get a clear yellowish fluid, and we've just chalked it up to thyroid making weird prolactin levels.

I wish I (and the nurses at the clinic I went to) had known this. When I started expressing green gunk from my boobies I went into full on panic mode - exacerbated when, on going to the walk in clinic, the two nurses who saw me let their eyes meet, heads shaking woefully at each other, before telling me to get to a GP *immediately*. Many tests (and weeks of stress) later I was assured it was okay.

This was before I knew of VP - another reason why this comm is so wonderful.

OP - sorry to hijack your thread, wish I had something useful to say for you :)

First time it got noticed, I got a mammogram and an ultrasound. This time around, smears on slides just to check that it was not some Martian form of cancer -- the endo said, "You realize, the chances of this lasting so long, going away when you were nursing, involving both breasts..." And I finished, "If it's cancer, I'm going in the medical books, yup!"

Needless to say, it is just being half-Martian. (That endo was really, really cool.)

I'm sorry that you had such a stressy time of it! O:(

I used to be pre-veterinary, but pre-calculus kicked my butt. (I later found out that the teacher hated the university-mandated book, and only assigned problems out of it. So every time I'd been reading the book and not understanding and thinking I was stupid? It was the book being totally obscure. O:p ) However, I basically retained an interest in biological stuff, somehow wound up having pretty good Google Fu (ha, I remember when Altavista was the search engine to go to! And the translator, too!)... So, um, well... *beth waves her hands around and shrugs*

But technically medical stuff is just a hobby for me.

Anyway! Yeah, keep making the lactation jokes. O;D (And if he actually starts getting white stuff out? Don't freak! Adoptive mothers can sometimes wind up breastfeeding their babies, despite never being pregnant, from letting the baby try to nurse before giving it a bottle each time.[1])

[Footnote 1: Naturally, this should only be tried for a reasonably brief amount of time, that will not tire the adopted baby so much that it won't be able to drink enough from the bottle! And, of course, appropriate bottle-delivered food should not be restricted! I may be pro-breastfeeding, but I'm not crazy-fanatic levels of pro-breastfeeding. The goal is, after all, to have a healthy baby, whatever it eats to get that way.

Unless, y'know, we're talking a baby t-rex. I'm not feeding a baby t-rex my cats, however much it might want them and however good cats might be for one.]

hmmm, ever since 1st pregnancy, i've considered myself pro-breastfeeding, but never really gave other species a thought. :D

On careful pondering and consideration... I don't think I'd breastfeed a t-rex baby, either. >_>

(I blame Daylight Savings Time. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.)

yeah, that was my first thought. probably too toothy. (I breastfed til 11 months and 15 months repectively, but i'm guessing t-rex teeth would be sharper?)

Beth, I am disappoint. You would see a ickle baby t-rex go without just because of his razor sharp teefs? I don't even know who you ARE anymore!

*nurses her raptor*

Alas, alas, I fear that once we get out of Mammalian Territory, I become this terrible person!

Well, I suppose if there were tooth-caps or something...

I've had this happen too, when I was having a lot of sex and having my nipples played with on a very regular basis. I panicked the first time and thought I was pregnant, but I know more now. lol
