epilators

I recently purchased an epilator. And I really love the idea of it, but I can't use it where I'd like to because of the pain (I can barley stand to use it on my legs). But I know some people use it on their bikini areas/arm pits instead of waxing or shaving. My question is, what have you found to numb the area effectively?

Honestly, I didn't find anything that could efficiently numb me. I remember when I first started epilating with my Emjoi, I tried icing the area, which made it completely hypersensitive to the hair being pulled out. Very dumb, I don't advise it, haha.

I finally started using the massager head it came with, so it kind of glides over the skin with smooth little combs before it gets epilated, so it was a little more desensitized. It still hurt, but the only thing I've found completely helps is just.. the endurance. I don't use any of the heads my epilator came with anymore, and I use it on my lower legs (knee-down), underarms, bikini area, stomach, and even the upper part of my mons.

icepack your underarms before hand. after i while i got use to the pain and now it pretty much is as painless as shaving.
personally i wouldnt try it on the bikini line i would probably scream lol, waxing doesnt phase me though, weird.

I only use an epilator on my lower legs because I find it really painful. Might psych myself up to doing more when I get used to it. But what I found helped with the lower legs was taking a shower beforehand. The warmth apparently opens up the pores.

Oh I just had another though.

I would also suggest waxing the entire area (or even shaving I guess) once before epilating. Then starting to epilate as soon as hairs start to grow back, before there are too many. And doing it really regularly. It hurts less if there's less hair.

I do it on my WHOLE body.

-hot shower before
-it gets better every time
-don't let the sensitive areas grow out too much. so do it more often, but take less time.
-the underarms will probably bleed and chafe at first and you will cry, but it will be SO MUCH thinner and better from then on. you just gotta endure at first.

good luck!

It honestly isn't too bad for me doing my underarms - probably because it's so quick...the bikini area I sort of do it in small sections at a time pulling the skin taut...BUT for me I usually end up with a few ingrowns..I think waxing that area would be much less stressful.

Try giving the area you are going to use it on a good 'scrubbing' with a dry loofa or other coarse pad. I think of it as getting the pain nerves in the area exercised so they will be 'tired' when you actually use the epilator on that area. Using real hot water might do the same thing and relax the skin a bit. It at least takes the edge off.

Also, I believe that leg hair is deeper than hair in the pubic area, so it hurts more to use it on legs, but that might not be a generally true.

Repeated use is the only thing I've found that helps numb the pain. You sort of get used to it after a while. The first time I used one though it took about a fortnight to do my lower legs, it was that painful but I just persisted. I've also found that using Azulene oil afterwards (you can get it at Boots. It's pricy but lasts for ages) helps against skin redness and soreness afterwards.

I use an epilator on my legs, but I've found it's just not workable for my bikini line. My guess is that it depends on an individual's hair. The few times I've tried epilating my bikini line it's much more painful than waxing, a lot slower, and leaves bruises, which never happens when I wax. I suspect that my pubic hair is too thick, or maybe the follicles are too large.

If I were you I'd try a few more times, taking the advice from above to wax or shave first and then epilate the hair as it grows back. It goes a lot easier if you're not epilating all the hair at once. I do the same thing with my legs. Realize, though, that it might not be workable for you when it comes to pubic hair.

I use sugaring wax kits at home on my bikini area and find it very easy and barely painful, since it's over so quickly (I think speed might be the key difference from epilating). And the advantage of the sugaring wax is that it comes off with water.
