hey everyone -

i've posted here before about my persistant and annoying yeast infection symptoms. i had been to the doctor several times, and every time she just took a look and told me it wasn't yeast, and that i was fine - that i was probably just sensitive down there (ha). i was itching and burning like crazy, so i obviously wasn't fine. so i followed y'all's advice and tried boric acid (after having tried OTC yeast infection treatments, tea tree oil, yogurt, acidophilus, the works..). i used boric acid every day for about a month and a half before stopping, and felt ok for a few days before my symptoms returned full force. i tried GSE (grapefruit seed extract) for a while, as well, taking it orally, and didn't find any relief. so, FINALLY, the other day, i got my doc to do a couple of tests and, lo and behold, she called me today saying i have a "massively heavy growth of yeast". big surprise. she prescribed me diflucan.

i've got a few questions though - if a month and a half of boric acid didn't even touch my yeast infection, how likely is it that diflucan will do anything? do you think the yeast might be so far up there that the boric acid just couldn't reach it? do you think this could be a bigger problem (candidiasis or whatever, if there's any stock in that..)? should i use boric acid and the diflucan together?

i'm so sick of having such a miserable vag! i'm scared that this shit will NEVER go away.. it's been so long. i dunno what to do.

Don't overuse the boric acid. If it didn't work the first time and your symptoms came back anyways, just let it go. I have have chronic YI for 6 years, and am resistant to diflucan.

I have a few recommendations:

-have you tried the anti-candida diet?
-find a dr who will test what strain of yeast you have, there are some that have to be treated differently
-modern doctors just don't get it, god knows Ive been to enough. I had better results seeing a naturopath-they deal with it all the time
-the reason I had an overgrowth was because my skin inside my vaginal walls (flake off) therefore making it easier for the bacteria to grow. there are alot of reasons for chronic YI.

Sometimes it is just nice to know you're not alone, it's a real problem.

Ah, it depends.

The diet is awful. To be honest I would hate my life if I had to stick to that diet and if you mess up just once-thats enough to ruin everything. Life would suck!

I dont have an answer for you about getting rid. I have been trying different things (last guy had me on 4 months of diflucan and steroid cream!) but now I am trying a whole mess of natural supplments and moderate diet changes. I dont know thats enough. All I know is I hate, hate, HATE it, but I could be dealing with worse.

Oh and get tested if you want but I'm not diabetic-there are 28093 other reasons you could have this problem.

Just reading through the archives. I'm dealing with a persistend YI and have tried about everything except the long-term diflucan. How often did you take it during that 4 month period? Once a week? This is probably going to be my next step as I've tried literally EVERYTHING else except the anti candida diet.

Has your doctor tested for underlying conditions? At this point, I would say that you need to address the possibility that you may have blood sugar or other issues that are causing the yeast.

I just wanted to say that when people talk about a drug-resistant strain of yeast (or bacteria) it refers to resistance to a particular drug or class of similar drugs. If you've never taken Diflucan before, it is extremely unlikely that your infection could be resistant to it. At-home treatments like garlic, tea tree oil, and boric acid are less likely to cause drug-resistance than medicines like Monistat and Diflucan because of the way they work, somewhat indiscriminately lysing (breaking open) cells rather than targeting the yeast by preventing them from performing a specific cell function. I hope this helps!

Honestly, I'd say you should just try one thing at a time. How can you tell what works and what hurts if you always try multiple treatments at once. I mean, even the natural remedies can be harsh and cause more irritation, so always trying multiple new treatments at once would make it hard to make a conclusion. Be patient, and give the Diflucan a chance to work, and then if it doesn't help, take it from there.
