My period is one day late and I'm freaking out... I know it's early days to be jumping to conclusions, but my cervix feels kind of weird (not as low as it usually is when I'm expecting my period?) and I am really, really scared. Can I get a pregnancy test already, or would the results be worthless this early?

You can take a pregnancy test two weeks after the last time you had sex. But if your period is late then take it now.

19 days, actually, is when a pregnancy test is first likely to be accurate.

However, it is true that if one's period is late for pregnancy reasons, a pee test is likely to be accurate.

Dollar Tree stores, in the US, carry decent pregnancy tests (see peeonastick.com - Dollar Tree tests are as good as most of their drugstore cousins, apparently!) for inexpensive. Take with first pee of the day (so any hCG will be at its most concentrated and likely to be detected by the test).

I think 19 days is when you can be pretty sure that a negative is true. But you can definitely get a positive quicker than that, depending on what cycle day you had sex on (i.e., whether the sperm had to wait around for the egg or not).

Yes. When you become pregnant, you start producing hCG, which is what the home pregnancy test tests for. It can take a little while before there's enough in your pee for the test to pick up. (That's why they recommend you use first morning urine--it's more concentrated after you've been holding it all night.)

If you're worried, I'd suggest taking a test now, and then if you still haven't gotten your period in a week, test again then.

You can take 1 now but if it is negative it might just mean it is too early. My friend just found out she was pregnant and took a pregnancy test like 4 days after missed period and it was still negative but then was positive a few days later.

You can test now, but to help alleviate some of your worries - do you have any reason besides the late period to believe that you are pregnant? Are you using birth control? Did you have sex at a time that would lead to conception?

The other day I was feeling sick and a customer asked if I could be pregnant. I freaked, then slowly answered the above questions for myself and decided that no, I was not pregnant. It helps to answer the questions slowly and rationally.

If you don't feel like your period is coming, you might well be right--but not necessarily because you're pregnant. Maybe you ovulated late this cycle because of stress. If you ovulate late, your period will also come late.

Many years ago, I went into absolute panic when it was only 6 hours after a missed period (OrthoTriLo, cycles were literally like clockwork, down to the hour). My then-fiance said it was nothing and not to worry. I got the test that night, took it, and it turned positive almost instantly.
