I've got an STD scare...

My boyfriend had scabies awhile back before we met, on his penis. He went to the docotor, got it all cleared up. But every now and again he gets these red bumps. He says they get itchy and come and go, usually in the same spots. They aren't blistery, just red patch bumps, not itty bitty, just a bump. No oozing or pus-ing. I though maybe they'd be scars? But they come and go and yea. The only other thing is in his semen, there's little jelly like things sometimes, which I also asked about before, but i've read that it's normal?

He's worried of having herpes or something else, and is sooo worried that he's given me something. I haven't had any symptoms besides having pain during sex, which i've made a psot about before. But the pain only started after my hymen tore, blah blah, i need to get it checked out. But maybe I do have something and that could be it? I've had a little bit of odd discharge, but nothing major.

Any help? Sound like an STD or herpes? I've given him oral many times and have no promlem in my mouth, and we usually use a condom during sex, but there has been a few times that we haven't.

We could tell you, "it might be an STD" or "it might not be an STD" but the only way to know for sure is for him to go get tested. And you should get tested, too, just to be safe.

Little itchy bumps in the same spots, on the genitals, does sound like it could be herpes, yeah. (Oral herpes, aka cold sores, are usually in the same spots or nearby, they itch/hurt, and they crop up sometimes. If I don't chew at them, the blister stage doesn't pop. That is, er, a bit if. >_> ) The next time he gets them cropping up, I'd hustle over to the doctor to get them swabbed (because if it's herpes, the best sample of virus shedding will be early on, generally).

If he does have it, well, blood test time for you both, I'd say. He may have HSV-1, in which case, if you do as well... you have antibodies that make it less likely (not impossible, but less likely) you'll catch it in a different place than you already have it, and most people have HSV-1 in the form of cold sores. (Like me! I hate having to abstain from giving oral when I get an outbreak, but... *sigh*) If one of you has HSV and the other doesn't... Well, communication!

It's also possible it's an allergic reaction of some kind! So talk to an allergist after HSV worries are ruled out.

Luck!

Yes, cold sores are caused by the HSV virus.

Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus, and while the majority of people have the virus (about 80% of the population) by the time they are adults, not everyone gets cold sores. I, and no one in my family, has ever had a cold sore. Which isn't to say none of us have the virus, as you can get it and never express symptoms, just that it isn't a universal thing, although it is very common.

Cold sores are herpes. They are usually HSV-1 -- HSV-1 prefers to infect the mouth, and HSV-2 prefers to infect the genitals. However, each can infect the other location, so if you ever get a cold sore... Don't give anyone oral sex till it's been gone for a few days at least. O:>

And you may or may not have antibodies (indicating exposure sometime in your life); the only way to tell is to get a blood test (which will NOT be part of the standard STD tests; you have to ask special for HSV tests). And a blood test can't tell you where you're infected, and it can't tell you if your immune system has the virus beaten back so thoroughly that you may never have an outbreak (or have an outbreak that you recognize; this is particularly common for guys with genital herpes, that they don't realize what it is or they have outbreaks only in the urethra).

My outbreaks went dormant for... six years or so? Longer? Then I woke 'em up with the UV from laser hair removal on my face and they've been cropping up a fair amount now, so I got a prescription from the doctor for an antiviral to NUKE THEM AH-HAHAHAHAHA. Ahem.

Anyway, I'm not saying "Oh! It must be herpes!" But itchybumps on the penis are very much worth checking for herpes, if only to rule it out.

i don't think the pain during sex is related.

Is it possible that this is a case of yeast? I get yeast infections on my tailbone and with all the heat and friction I sometimes get red bumps when it's particularly bad. (And it is yeast in my case - I went to the doctor about it the first time)

What makes me think this might be a possibility is that you have pain during sex and some odd discharge, which are often signs of a yeast infection... and since the bumps you described don't seem blistery... well, it could be just that. But I think you should see about a doctor, as they'll have advice and knowledge that I don't. Good luck!

It's very difficult for males to get yeast infections. They just don't have the same anatomy as a female that is the right environment for yeast to grow. It is possible to get yeast in other parts of the body, but they are typically in moist places (mouth, or in folds of skin).

Red blistery patches coming and going sounds like herpes.

While it's true that men may not present symptoms as severely as women, men can indeed get penile yeast infections, sometimes from having sex with their partner unprotected when their partner is infected.

Mayo clinic says:

Signs and symptoms of a male yeast infection include a reddish rash, itching or burning at the tip of the penis. Fortunately, most male yeast infections are easily treated with an over-the-counter antifungal treatment, such as Monistat (yes, men can use it too). Apply the medication directly to the affected skin twice daily for a week. If the rash doesn't go away, or if it recurs frequently, consult your doctor.

I never said men can't get yeast infections, just that it's not as common. And the symptoms would occur at the urethra, which is indeed a good medium for yeast. But, correct me if I'm wrong, I wasn't under the impression that the OP's boyfriend's rash was on the tip.

The best thing you two can do is have him get swabbed for both HSV and yeast as soon as possible (while the bumps are still there).

Yeah, there is really no way to know except to have him (and you) looked at.

Good luck.

Sounds like the herp'. You don't need to have an outbreak to get tested. Get some bloodwork done, both of you.

Condoms help, but it's likely you've already contracted it. It's contractable even not during an outbreak (the chances just aren't as great, but it's definitely still possible).

Yeah, asymptomatic viral shedding. It isn't a lot of the time (around 5% on average, isn't it?) -- but it is present. Condoms are... considered 70% effective? (If they're latex or one of the polymumbles; lambskins wouldn't do a bit of good.)

That said, yeast infections on a guy's skin do tend to look just like a reddish irritation, and I think the blighted stuff enjoys easily irritated skin -- it's not impossible that it's an opportunistic infection that might've grabbed on as long-ago as the scabies issue!

But skin yeasties tend to stay put and remain irritated, in my experience, not come and go.

i had scabies
(a parting gift from my ex. ..long distance thing, no sex but spent a night with him)
i had it quite bad because i kept on being misdiagnosed even though i specifically kept asking about scabies because i was sure i had caught it from my ex.
so i had it for about a month before i finally went to a different doctor.
long story short, after everything cleared up and healed i have never had any sort of relapses or reoccurenses or anything like that.
