continuing on from my poll answer:
i've only been on yasmin for 3 months. for the first month i had annoying headaches, they felt like i was going crosseyed, but they're gone now.
otherwise it's a good thing.
no side effects.
remembering to take it is annoying but i haven't forgotten yet. i usually get all comfortable in bed and jump up saying oh shit and then go take it...

in short i think yasmin is a good one. but everyone has the potential to react differently to any pill.
good luck

i like to talk. not enough room in the poll answer thingy.

since i started my pill 4 years ago i have never gotten pregnant (hoorah) even when monogamous and therefore not using condoms (of course after STD tests on the part of both partners. thought i'd point that out), my cramps are virtually gone, my period is shorter, lighter, and i get it like clockwork the wednesday after i start my placebos, generally around 2pm. and i end promptly saturday night and start my next pack sunday and everything is beautiful. i really just lucked out and the first pill they put me on worked perfectly and i haven't ever seen a need to change. i <3 the pill.

Ortho-Cyclen sucked a LOT, killed my sex drive, but Nordette has been wonderful. I didn't take any medications for my cramps this month, and they used to be so bad that if I didn't keep myself on really strong drugs, the pain would make me throw up. Now the pain is light enough that sometimes I don't take anything just because I'd have to bother with actually finding pills... and finding something to drink... and I'd rather keep doing whatever I'm doing. Plus I'm MUCH less moody. (At least when I'm taking active pills)

I would submit to the poll, but I have necassary comments that don't fit into the boxes.

I am on Birth Control due to irregular/infrequent periods.

I was first placed on Levlite. A low-dose monophasic BCP which worked fine. I was on that for two years. I was on my parent's medical insurance then I hit the age at which I was dropped, so I moved on to the County Health Dept -- being a poor and broke college student.

The Health Department put me on TriPhasil. A low-dose triphasic BCP. I was on this for 6 months. I got off it, because I noticed that when I took the last set of pills before the placebo ones (when your period starts) I was having cramps and other side effects I didn't like (headaches). This only occured with the third set of pills before the placebo ones in the pack.

Then I was switched to LoOrval. Another low-dose monophasic BCP. Everything has gone okay with these. No spotting, no cramps, no side effects.

The only reason why I am still not on the LevLite is because the Health Department doesn't carry them, so they had to find something close.

Now that I have insurance once again, I could go back to my OBGYN office and get back on the LevLite; however paying $35 for 6 months of pills at the Health Department sure beats paying $60 for 6 months with an Rx co-pay.

Summary:
I am on BCP's for infrequent/irregular peiods.
The health dept is cheap, but may not caryy BCP's that you may have once been on.
Monophasic pills and Triphasic pills do make big differences.

I was on Mircette, and had a good experience with it all around except that it aggrevated my migraines. This was not Mircette's fault, really - it's actually the best combonation pill for people who gets migraines to be on, since it's so low dose and it has a teeny bit of estrogen in the placebo week, but it turns out that my migraines just can't tolerate taking estrogen.

I would suggest asking about a low-dose pill. They're equally effective, but are less likely to give you side effects, since there's less hormones. I would also suggest asking about a monophasic pill (a pill with the same dose every day of the active pills) if you want to be able to skip your periods at all, because skipping tends to work better with monophasics.

BTW, I have a Mirena IUD now, in case you were wondering. So far, I really like it, but I've only had it 2 1/2 weeks now. :)

mircette made my migraines worse, ovcon35 and estrostep FE were both good in that sense though. :)

I'm on marvelon. The first 2 or 3 months I was extremely emotional. Other than that, I experienced no weight gain. My periods were regular to begin with, but before I went on the pill, I would bleed for almost a week, now I am done in about four days. I am in a monogamous relationship and have been for almost two years. I am not using any other method of contraception, and marvelon has proven to be reliable.

I only recommend the Pill in three cases: 1) if you hate hate hate condoms, 2) if you're paranoid about pregnancy, and 3) if you have agonizing cramps or frustrating irregularity. I realize a lot of women fall into these categories, but if not, I don't recommend going to the trouble and expense; the cost and the potential for negative side effects are simply too great. I myself gained five pounds and lost my sex drive on every pill I've ever taken, though I could tolerate Loestrin 1/20.

It's your choice then whether you want to try it for period regulation. If you're going to do so, I recommend something very low dose. I usually recommend Mircette or the NuvaRing first for bad periods, since I'd say those are the best at reducing flow amount.

Loestrin 1/20 is also a good one for crampy periods.

I was on a pill with iron for a couple of years as a teenager, then I got pregnant while using it properly. So, after my abortion, I switched to another pill, but that one made me violently ill every morning for longer than the three months that I experienced with the first pill. Oh, and I got pregnant on that, too. So, I switched to Ortho Tricyclene (sp?), and everything was fine. My skin remained clear, no morning sickness from the pills, and then I noticed that I kept having problems with . . . something in my upper respiratory system. I started using the machines at pharamcies to measure my blood pressure. Every time I checked, my blood pressure was higher than the time before. I finally had to go off of them when it became dangerously high. I only experienced problems with my blood pressure again when I was pregnant with my daughter, and had to stay on bed rest for the third trimester due to P.I.H. My blood pressure dropped during labor, and leveled out to a low to normal rate . . . I've been fine ever since, and condoms are my friends.
