Hello everyone, I'm new here.

I have a stupid question to ask.

*hides behind chair while asking question*

I'm a singer, classical music mostly which requires a lot of "head resonance" and stuff like that. Most singers have problems with getting their tone out and accomplishing resonance during their period, but for some reason I sing best on my period, very resonant, and even my speaking voice is more out, pointed, and can be heard better and not so swallowed.

*comes out from hiding*

If by some off chance you know why my voice (both singing and speaking) is less swallowed during the time of my cycle, do share.

hrm. OK, I am just speculating.
For one thing, your body's level of hormones is lowest on your period. Perhaps the lower level of estrogen and progeterone affects your voice in some way?

The other thought I have is that a number of people who work in the arts report that they are most creative and productive when menstrual (or premenstrual). It seems to be a period where one's inhibitions are lowered -- society generally constructs this as a bad thing by saying women are "bitchy" on their periods (but anything a woman complains about on her period is something that bothers her the rest of the month, she's just better about keeping it in the rest of the time). This lowering of societal inhibitions seems to equate with unleashing one's own inner creativity. So perhaps you sing better because you feel less restrained?

GOOD theory! I really like that. When women went into the hut (literally) in ages long before ours, they went there to do crafts and whatnot, if I'm not mistaken.

Maybe we are simply more expressive and creative and less inhibited. Ah. I love us.

yessssss!!! thank you. i don't even know how many times i have explained that very same idea. especially to other women. whenever i argue with my roomate she like 'oh you're just about to get your period' and i'm like 'yeah. i am. but regardless whatever's bothering is still bothering me, hormonal differences or not, and its how i feel!' ugh!!!!!!!!!!!!!! if i am cranky or snapping at people, that's one thing, but if i am legitimately bothered or hurt, i don't want it brushed off just because i happen to be close to my period, you know?

god, I hate when a woman complains or shows anger, and some jerk is like, "You must be PMSing," or "Are you on the rag?," or "Go take some Midol." It's such an easy way to dismiss and delegitimize women's concerns.

I'm a singer as well, and I've noticed this, I've assumed it's because I don't retain much water during my period.

interesting

my voice is somewhat nassaly much of the time, but sounds clear when I have my period. I've always related this to another phenomenon: my writing improves when I have my period, and my way of thinking is generally clearer. I've always surmized that this occurs because we're most confident on our periods--not in that obvious, I've-got-a-new-pair-of-pants kind of way, but in a subconscious "I can bring forth new life if I choose to!" kind of way.

But when you're on your period, maybe you really DO (have to) have a new pair of pants! ;)

*giggle*

That is really cool! I'm a singer too, but I've never really conciously noted any correlations between my voice and cycle... Weird! I'll definitely have to check it out.

not a stupid question at all, but an amazing phenomenon. aren't chicks' bodies just amazing? of course, i have no clue why that is...

very neat userpic, by the way.

similarly, i've heard handwriting changes during your cycle (or can at least). i'm not sure if mine does. most my writing these days is with a keyboard. but i'm not sure if i was able to figure out any difference a few years back. i have no idea what the correlation between handwriting and your cycle would be though.
