i have been using sea sponge tampons for a few months now. i don't feel like another one of society's consumer drones. forced to spend more then 144$ a year on disposable products. products that white men are getting rich off selling me. i'm no longer another womyn who trashes 17,000 pads and tampons in her life time.

nopers i have my lil' squishy friends from the sea! all natural baby.

i feel so much better. i put them in and they feel like nothing's there! i can go swimming and there are no strings attached ^.^
some womyn have sex with them in, haven't tried that yet myself.
but it rocks my socks!!!

yeah they're better for your health, the environment, economy and happiness. if you wanna know more feel free to ask.

your cunt lovin' friend,
kali

sea sponges are like tampons, in that they absorb menstrual blood and such, but they arent actually tampons.
and what would be nasty about that?

IT'S NOT A TAMPON.

for a feminist, you should educate yourself a bit more.

google for sea sponges and learn what they are before you go making blanket statements about "nastiness" and tampons. because it's not a tampon.

excuse you. look at the comment before mine

"sea sponges are like tampons, in that they absorb menstrual blood and such, but they arent actually tampons. and what would be nasty about that?"

that is what a tampon is "they absorb menstrual blood and such!"

Sea sponges are smaller, and squishy, and unlike a tampon they don't occupy most of the vaginal canal. I don't really see how it's different from having sex with an Instead cup in ... probably more comfortable actually.

that's what a maxi is, too.

in fact, only lunacup/keeper/instead doesn't absorb blood.

BUT, a sea sponge is probably a fifth of the size of a tampon. so your vagina isn't being taken up by a wad of bleached cotton. so sex is probably fine. it's not right for everyone, i'm sure, but it's no reason for you to freak out.

unless you have a problem with menstrual blood in general. in which case, i'm sorry, but you're a chick. ta daa.

i am fine with my femaleness ;) i am actually looking at the keeper because i resently learned the some artist paint with their menstrual blood. i didn;t know it was 5th the size of a tampon. i was just worried that it might get stuck in or soemthing. and i have no problem having sex on my period, i just put a towel down.

sorry if i was rude earlier.

For a feminist, you should show a bit more kindness and tolerance toward a fellow woman who may not have your experiences or background.

sea sponges are NOT tampons. theyre sponges, which is what your vagina feels like to a penis, so i dont see why it would be a big deal.

i wouldnt have sex with anything in me. wouldnt it push the sea thing up WAY into you?

theres no where for it to go. your vaginal canal is only about 5-6 inches long, and then theres your cervix. nothings gonna get pushed up your cervix. it just cant happen (save for gynaecological procedures, and backally abortions via coat hanger)

Hi Kali, I'm going to be putting out a zine about alternative menstrual products and practices soon, called Ms Scarlet. You can find out more here:
http://www.msscarlet.org

I would love a short personal experience blurb about using sea sponges, if you're interested. It can be as short or long as you want, just under 600 words, please. You'll find my email on the site. Thanks!

I was thinking about using them, but the idea of a once-living creature in my vagina sorta freaks me out. Maybe I'll get over that someday and say goodbye to tampons.

can you use synthetic ones?

From: [identity profile] amiga500.livejournal.com
I wouldn't, they're not nearly as soft or absorbent, and I don't know how easily you could sterilise them.

go cunt love!

couple of questions. where do you get yours? and do they leak? I've been on the keeper for about a year now, and would love to try out something new.

does the whole dead animal thing bug you? I might think I am shoving a dead thing up my cooch. thoughts?

go you! =)

when i had a period, i thought i was on the cutting edge for using ob. hah!

though i'm currently on depo and am therefore without period, i'll definitely try sea sponges when i'm off depo.

did you cut yours down to a certain size? i think that's the only thing about sea sponges that's a tad daunting.

are yours farmed or from the water itself? harvesting things like that from the ocean are definitely not eco-friendly!

i checked out that website someone posted above and they look really cool to use, i like how they are soft becuase i have trouble inserting tampons because they are hard and they hurt. do you put the sponge up as far as a tampon? and when you go swimming does the blood leak at all since its like your washing it? thanks for the answers i hope to try one!

that's really awesome :)

I'd like to try them someday when I get rid of this recurrent UTI. I can't seem to kill the damn things and I'm afraid that anything reusable may harbor bacteria, so disposable is the way for me for now.

But thank you for letting me know, they look like a very comfortable option... and I know I'd feel good about myself not generating so much trash.
