Hey there, I am new here... have a question!
I was wondering, when I wear tampons I always have to wear a mini pad with them or there is leaks. Is this normal or is something wrong with me? I know a lot of women don't have to wear mini pads and it seems kind of like an inconvenience.
thanks all!!!

That is not normal.. you should upsize to a bigger tampon- super absorbant. :)

Please be aware that the higher the tampon's absorbancy rating, the more it is associated with Toxic Shock Syndrome. (http://www.mckinley.uiuc.edu/health-info/womenhlt/tox-shoc.html)

Personally, I can only wear a tampon on the first two days of my flow when it's heaviest. If I use a tampon with a too-high absorbancy rating, it dries out my membranes and is very uncomfortable. So I always back up a tampon with a pantiliner, because blood does leak down the string onto my panties.

Also, I use and highly highly recommend Natracare tampons (http://www.natra.dircon.co.uk/English%20Home.htm). They're more expensive, but I feel they're worth it.

There are some brands that just always leak for some people.

Even if I use the super absorbent Tampax, which are painful for me to insert anyway, they still leak.

I never really found a satisfactory tampon. I just use a Mooncup now. http://www.mooncup.co.uk It never leaks! It forms a sort of vacuum seal (heh, not as painful as it sounds, it isn't uncomfortable at all), so no leaks ever. Other cups to check out are the DivaCup (http://www.divacup.com) and The Keeper (http://www.thekeeper.com).

Tampax always leak for me. Playtex sometimes does. The most dependable are ob.

another good tampon that doesnt leak is kotex security. i never used anything but ob until i was FORCED while on vacation in coleman, michigan and stopped at this small store that had NOTHING but kotex or no name. i have since swtiched from ob to kotex.

plus they're small and easy to tote around. =)

with some tampons, i always seem to leak down one side before it swells up enough to soak up all the blood. so i leak too. i use pantiliners, if only for peace of mind.

I always feel the regular Tampax when I put those in. They are too long or something. It could be the brand that doesn't work for people.

I would try using a higher absorbancy than you are using now. Sometimes it seems like if I don't change them every couple hours, I will leak (I get way heavy periods). I use OB brand and they now have tampons in "ultra absorbancy"...they're huge, they've got to be almost the diameter of a quarter...but they don't leak!

No matter *what* brand of tampon I use, I have some leakage. Going up to the next absorbency doesn't help, it just dries out my poor membranes. Fortunately, I have no problem wearing minipads or cloth pads. ;)

this is very normal. i always wear a mini-pad when i wear tampons, just as peace of mind and because i may leak. dont always assume you may need a higher absorbancy(sp?) it may be too high and then you run into problems. good luck

I too experience some leakage. I think it depends on the brand. I find that changing an hour or so earlier than usual and wearing a mini liner works.

Have you tried switching brands of tampon? My Mom swears by Tampax and I can't stand them...they're uncomfortable to put in, and they leak. She doesn't have that problem. I prefer the OB tampons. There are enough tampon brands out there that a little experimentation might solve your problem.

I've never had that. I use OB & they expand length wise (wow I sound like a commercial, but yeah. lol.) & they're pretty good! you should try them if you haven't already.

I'm yet another person who has leaks with Tampax, but not OB :)

You might try OB. They're made to expand in all directions so as to be less likely to leak.

thank you so much everyone!!! i can not believe how helpful you all have been. yeah, i have definatley tried many brands through out my life, nothing has changed. very irritating. i have settled on the earthy natural tampons because the dyes wig me out.
i appreciate all the advice it's been very helpful!!!
