So a couple of nights ago while watching porn, I decided to conduct a little "experiment".  I think I remember reading somewhere about a study that was conducted recently regarding if humans can pick up on the smells of arousal the way animals can. I decided to attempt to stay in a complete state of arousal the following day to see if anyone picked up my "scent"........ and the results were surprising!
During class, I had 3 different guys (which I hardly ever talk to) come up to me. One asked for my number, the other told me he loved me, and the third commented on how cute my toes were.
While at work, a guy that used to be a FWB (but we ended things like a year ago) told me for some reason he couldn't stop staring at my hiney.  I told him about the experiment I was trying, and he admitted that he hadn't had any type of sexual feelings toward me for quite a while until that day. He said it must work!
So, do you guys think this is all just a coincidence or can humans really pick up the scent of arousal?

there is a huge body of research on this topic, especially within the field of evolutionary psychology. the short answer is yes, humans, like most other mammals, can pick up pheromones released during arousal.

How on earth did you manage to stay in a state of arousal the whole day?! It sounds like it could be quite exhausting! haha

Tell me your secrets!! How does one stay in arousal for that long? I am interested to try this with my boyfriend...

you know it's funny...i first read this entry like 15 minutes ago and i keep coming back to me because i keep thinking about people talking about having to work at it. i must just be weird because i'm always sort of at least half 'on' naturally lol.

my partner once told me that i ooze sex, and as long as i 'forget' that i'm supposed to be ugly (i have a lot of body image issues- i honestly have no idea what i really look like have the time) i get swarmed with people. i've never thought about it this way but this might be part of it- i've trained myself to ignore it, not turn it off completely.

he said he loved you? lol

i'm sure this is entirely possible (the humans picking up on arousal scents thing)

Interestingly, a guy I went on a few dates with once told me that the best way to attract a whole bunch of guys would be if I masturbated but didn't clean myself up downstairs, then just walk around and they'd be able to smell it on me but not really know why I seemed so attractive. But, yes, humans and pheromones/smells still go hand in hand, we just tend not to recognize it because we're so overwhelmed with other sensory data all day.

In the book Wetlands by Charlotte Roche the protagonist does similar experiments by basically dabbing her vaginal secretions behind her ears as a perfume. Sounds like an interesting experiment!

I never heard of this book, but have read about this and of people actually doing it. I think I have even heard of it as a tip for women!

My German lecturer last year recommend that I read this book (in German, of course) but I could never find it and now I would be able to so easily, but in English. Not nearly as fun.

The only thing that worries me is the third commenting on how cute your toes are.

YOUR TOES.
EWWW! (ah I'm so not a person who likes feet, I believe thats why I love shoe's so much)

BUT YOUR TOES? he could of said anything!!

But it does work!!

Sometimes before I go into work at night (my partner and I both work at this restaurant huzzah for him being a chef!) I'll be like ohh I haven't seen him all day, and I have a huge libido too so I'll get all excited and as soon as he sees me its just fun cause we end up having to work 5+ hours untill we can go home. And on days like that I get about $200 worth of tips from men and women in the restaurant and motel! (its a restaurant in a high class motel here!haha)

as much as i'm not a foot person, i'm still more concerned about the person who declared their love. who does that to someone they've never spoken to before!? I'd be completely speechless (in a bad way) but if someone complemented my toes (will never happen, i wander in and out of a cafe/restaurant and ride my bike a lot, so always need to be wearing closed in shoes) I'd probably say, "er, thanks", think that it was a bit unusual. But kind of sweet too.

I'd say it's entirely possible, but I'd also point out the fact that, since you were thinking so much about sex, your body language was likely also reflecting that. And people are wired to respond pretty strongly to body language. So it was probably a combination of everything.

I did a date a guy at one point though who told me I smelled different when I was in an amorous mood.

I'd believe it...however I think being constantly aroused (in public no less!) would embarrass me more than be amusing lol!

Wow, what a trip! I thought only fanfiction's Severus Snape could spell arousal. lol

This is so cool. I'll have to experiment with my husband, we work at home together, could be fun. ;)

I once went out with very dirty hair, like must have been dripping pheromones dirty, and I got picked up on a ridiculous amount....

Just curious...but are you on any form of HBC? I've always wondered if that woudl alter my arousal scent at all.

It does. We just talked about this in my human sexuality class. Being on HBC gives you a MORE attractive scent than women who are ovulating (which is WEIRD b/c in terms of evolution, it's...sorta backwards, but whatever).

I'm not sure if it applies to vaginal secretions though (but I assume it does), as we were doing the "white T-shirt" experiment, which has to do with a person's natural B.O.

Do you have any proof of that? I've heard the complete opposite.

Here's the original study: http://beheco.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/reprint/15/4/579

I should mention that it may have been my teacher who has repeatedly found this (they do the experiment every year for the past 3-4 years for the Animal Behaviors class, and it often gets spilled over into the Human Sexuality class), as reviewing the original study shows that they didn't find a difference between pill users and nonusers.

*Sigh* too bad I go to a college with a 20 percent male, 10 percent straight population. Even if it worked for me I'd never know.

no, it's an art college and the women outnumber the males four to one...it's such a small school that you can know just about everyone here within a year or two. And of the men we have, at least half of them are gay.

We've got a lot of lesbians, but definitely not the majority. Oh, and a few transpeople.

That's really interesting! I haven't tried it all day like you have, but I know that if I'm feeling aroused when I get into my boyfriend's car, he'll definitely react to it. But like someone else pointed out, it could be as much to do with body language as scent :-)
