For the past few weeks I have had pain in my tailbone, not awful pain, but enough to aggrivate. It seems to hurt when I set down, and, seems to hurt worse when I lean back while setting.  Sometimes hurts when I stand up. I have had no tramua to the tailbone, I have not fallen or anything, has anyone ever had this problem? And what was it? And is it possible to pull something, in your back and cause you to hurt in your tailbone. I don't want to go to the dr. and have my insurence pay and me pay some for something thats not that big of a deal. Please leave a reply anyone that has any idea what it could be or that has had this problem. I have never had any problem before it just started a while back. Thanks

It happened to me when I was quite young, I think like 13 or so. It hurt me a lot, and it lasted for a long time. I never did find out what was wrong with it, but it eventually went away. I hadn't had any trauma either, it just came out of nowhere one day. It was very strange. I'm sorry I can't tell you more, except that it happened to me too and I got better, although I never did find out what happened.

Is there a bump if you feel it? I'm only asking b/c I had that sort of pain (esp. while leaning back) but I did have a bump and it ended up being an infection that needed to be drained. I guess it's not all that uncommon. I figure you would have mentioned if there was a bump, but just in case...

I had the exact same thing as krisssa. It ended up being an infected ingrown hair follicle. It was so bad that the pain would wake me up in the middle of the night. It got so bad that I had to go to the ER to take care of it. And I couldn't feel the bump at first. . . it took a few days to show up. But it was so swollen that it hurt no matter what I did.

When I was 15 years old I had a similar issue that [livejournal.com profile] krisssa has. I had done nothing wrong to my tailbone and suddenly it started to ache and hurt. I went to get examined and they found out it was a cyst that formed from an infection. These commonly end up "popping" and draining themselves but to play on the safe side they recommended I get it all cleaned out via surgery so it wouldn't get infected again and cause problems :/ They also gave me antibiotics to kill the infection before the surgery and that effectivly ended my pain. The surgery was also an out-patient type so it wasn't that big of a deal.

I'm 23 now with no problems of that sort since. If you get it checked out they may find what I had for you and they might recommend surgery...or who knows. It could be something completely different. My dad told me he had something similar happen to him when he was young and he didn't need surgery at all.

I had this when I was in my early teens. I went to the doctor and he said that my tailbone somehow hadn't finished fully forming in some areas and it'll take a little longer. Now I'm fine and barely get any pain.

Could be a muscle thing. If it is, a heating pad would probably help. If a heating pad doesn't help (and I'm thinking leaving it on for a good thirty minutes before you check for improvement) then see a doctor to be sure nothing is wrong.

That actually does sound like when I broke my tailbone. Honestly though, it doesn't matter much if it's broken or if there's just something bruised/strained down there. According to the doc who saw me, the treatment's the same - "try not to hurt it again". There's pretty much nothing that can be done. She suggested I sit on one of those inflatable donut thingies you get at the drug store, and told me to stop riding horses for a few weeks (don't suppose that'll be an issue for you!)

Do you spend a lot of time sitting down? Sitting puts a huge amount of pressure on the lower back, and problems (from minor aches to being in too much pain to walk) can occur in people who spend most of their day in sitting positions. This is particularly true absent regular exercise.

In any event, hope you feel better soon!

Check out the symptoms of Pilonidal Cysts. I think that is what a few of the above posters are talking about. If it sounds like that is what you have, start exfoliating the area immediately and you may want to visit a doctor. It the area starts to get really infected the treatment sounds like it might be worse than if you get it treated immediately.

I bruised my tailbone when I was 12 or 13, and it hurt like crazy for several months after that. Now I have occasional tail-bone pain when I'm sitting (especially when I'm watching a movie at the theater, or driving, or otherwise sitting for a long time). I *doubt* that that pain has anything to do with when I hurt it 8 years ago, but it could. I usually blame the pain that I have now on the fact that I have an almost non-existent butt...
Mine is kind of a dull, achey pain, but it's strong enough that when I get it I have to change my sitting position right away.

I had super tailbone pain for just a few days early in my pregnancy. (I am not suggesting you're pregnant, just that...that's when it happened for me. :)) It was because of sitting a lot, and also probably alignment issues. My chiropractor helped with it, and I would suggest seeing one yourself if you can. Often, insurance will cover all or most of the cost of a visit.

I've had this same issue and they were cysts that had to be lanced and drained in the doctor's office. They numbed my tail bone up a little before doing it, so it didn't hurt too bad.

Yep, I've had this... and had it for at least a half a year or longer. I had no idea what caused it... and it was when I was at my sickest before I was diagnosed with lyme disease and hypothyroidism. I thought it was the new couch my hubby and I had just bought, but it wasn't as it continued even if I was not at home and was instead visiting family out of state. I had not injured it in any way or fallen either.

It hurt so bad to just sit or even lay down. And even if I layed on my side, my tail bone STILL hurt... It was crazy.

Shortly after getting my diagnosis, the tail bone pain went away. I still really have no idea what the cause was or if it was due to my illness.
