my period has never been normal, however these past months it's been off the charts.

my last real period was in november. i did not have it at all in dec/jan. in february it started, but it was mostly spotting, i was maybe going through 2 pantiliners a day. it continued like this for almost a month. there would be days during this time where i wouldn't bleed but get wet/excited and start bleeding, or when i worked out i would bleed. last week it stopped but came back on friday when i exercised. and today i woke up with minor cramps and i had a large blood clot. nothing too extreme but it was bigger than normal.

oh yes around dec/jan time when i would normally have a period, i had period symptoms like heat flashes and bloating, and barely noticable cramps, but no blood.

i made an appointment with the heath center at school for next week for a pap, but is there anything you guys can tell me about what might be going on?

Is there any chance of pregnancy? If so, I'd take a pregnancy test.

Are you on Hormonal Birth Control? Your pill may not be controlling your breakthrough bleeding well, if so; odd bleeding patterns are very common with HBC.

If your period has never been normal... Well, pause while people playing the VP game take a drink -- one of my un-recognized symptoms of my undiagnosed hypothyroidism was irregular periods, and considering that it wasn't caught for nearly two decades, thyroid issues are now my pet hobby horse. If you can, get your health center to test your TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) levels. They should be below a 3 (make them tell you the numbers; some labs use outdated numbers!). Ideally, you'd want your free T3 and free T4 tested as well, to catch the occasional times when TSH doesn't tell the whole story.

Good luck!

If that's the case, you very likely have thyroid issues as well -- my mom's father's side of the family, she realized after she got diagnosed by accident, was full of hypothyroid complaints and hypothyroid "early" deaths, dementia, etc. (My grandfather probably died at least 5-10 years "early," and with dementia; if he'd been tested, he might've been able to see my daughter, and realize what was going on. Makes me so upset.)

My mom was diagnosed at TSH 100. She pestered me to get tested, and I had TSH 10...

Or, ah, yeah. Thyroid issues run in families, and not just with the lady-bodied people, either. Now that I'm getting my replacement hormone (synthetic), I'm much more regular with periods.

Wishing you more luck!
