Hi all. How can you tell the difference between regular back pain and kidney infection pain? I know kidney infections are usually paired with fevers and such, but I know some of you have said you've been treated for kidney infections you weren't aware you had. Thanks for your time.

I'm recovering from an asymptomatic kidney infection that apparently would've killed me. My temp was only 35-36 degrees all week leading up to my hospitalisation.

The pain wasn't even really pain. A dull ache in my back when I stood up, and the odd stabby thing above my waist, that's it.

If you think you might have an infection that might've gone to your kidneys please see someone!

Woke up with severe pain than came on suddenly in fifteen minutes and wouldn't shift with tramadol, Codeine, paracetamol and ibuprofen. Girlfriend called the emergency services and I was taken to my local Emergency dept. before being transferred to the regional neurology unit.

The sudden pain was from a completely coincidental first kidney stone outbreak. That was the only thing that made me seek help. The infection, with the backache, I'd put down to a bad cold. It had been going on for about a month I think.

Oh God yeah, never thought I'd be happy about pain worse than labour! I was really upset when I got out, knowing how ill I'd been without knowing. My most recent urine tests had been clear, so It's all rather baffling. I'd discounted a kidney infection purely because of the lack of fever, even though I had similar backache to yours.
Yep, the stones were an early Christmas present :D

I've gone to doctors for that kind of pain and they just shrugged it off and told me to go home. Even when I threw up blood, and had extreme bladder pain. Although most doctors in my area are morons. I'm still here though though, so it cleared up I guess.

I've never had a kideny infection but I've had many many kidney stones. My pain is generally right below my ribs and can sometimes be described at 'colic' or comes and goes in waves. Sometimes is will make me naseous. I didn't know I had kidney stones for a few years however, the doctors would not believe that it was my kidneys because I had no pain from a flank tap. A 15mm stone later...Fun Times
