Hello.....
I would REALLY appreciate any information on the Pill and its side affects and I would like to know reasons why it is NOT a good thing to take as birth control.
I am squeamish about possibly taking it. There is something in me telling me "Noooooooooo!!!"

Personally, I've had good experiences with using the pill.

It can increase the risk of blood-clot related problems (which are potentially life-threatening), especially if you smoke or already have circulatory problems.

Weight gain and depression are common side effects.

Bleeding between periods and nausea almost always happen during the first few months, though they go away over time for most people (and if they don't, a different prescription may fix the problem).

Your periods are likely to be lighter/shorter. A lot of people like this, but some don't, and it can be somewhat disconcerting.

Just about anything you can think of hormone related stands a chance of being effected in some way (for example, acne may get better for some people, and worse for others). Sometimes a different formula pill can help if one pill causes problems.

With many pills, you need to take it at the same time each day for it to be effective. Also, a lot of medications interfere with the pill. These factors can lead to overconfidence in the pill as a form of birth control.

There may be long term side effects, including potentially life-threatening ones (such as an increased risk of cancer) which have not yet been discovered.

Personally, I've had a very good experience with the pill so far. My skin is clear most of the time, my periods are lighter, and I haven't noticed any negative side effects.

these are my personal reasons why i will never ever go back on the pill:

i immediately gained 15+ pounds
i turned into a moody, short tempered bitch
i always broke out a lot during my period

there are only two of them, but they made me really unhappy and depressed all of the time. also, it caused more than a few arguments between me and my boyfriend, which is not good.

the good thing is that my period were ridiculously light, but for me, it wasn't a good enough reason to continue the pill.

what other methods are you looking at?

good luck choosing.

Well, it made my breasts bigger, which was a good thing for me but not necessarily for anyone else....

Go with your instincts...even if you were physically fine on the pill, if you aren't happy taking it, then there are a few other options. I kinda started taking it because someone I was sleeping with at the time wanted me to, and I keep taking it because it makes my cramps go away (well, that whole not-worrying-about-being-pregnant thing is nice too), but sometimes I just want my old natural cycle back.

If your body is telling you "Noooooooo!!" then that seems to me to be the best reason not to take it. Listen to your body; usually it is the best judge of a situation.

... if you're really against it for some reason, why not look into other kinds of b/c? (Unless, of course, you have to be on it for medical reasons--a whole nother kettle of fish) I've had good experiences on it--it made me mildly nauseous for the first couple months, which is normal, but that went away. It can also trigger weight gain and depression in some people--again, often solveable by switching formulae. (I'm prone to both and the pill triggered neither in me; i was lucky)

One good thing about it instead of, say, the shot is that it's quickly reversable: you try it, find you don't like it, you can stop taking it--at the end of the month if you want to not confuse your body, or immediately if you *really* don't like that. If it's recommended for you, I'd respectfully suggest that--try it, see what you think, but know that you can, of course, stop. However, if you're majorly against it, that is a valid reason to look at other forms of b/c.

Alot of those side affects are reasons I'm against taking it. I'm depressed enough as it is without the pill, don't need it making things worse. If my wieght changes I want to lose not gain *I weigh about 200 now*. Lighter and shorter periods would be a nice thing, but for me the goods just don't outweigh the bads. If you find a diffrent way that works really well, can you let me know?

... for what it's worth, it doesn't do that to everyone--i have both familial and personal tendencies towards both obesity (or just being overweight for me) and depression, but the pill didn't cause either to be more serious than they would have already been. but if you're seriously worried about them then yes, so far as birth control goes, there are other options you might be more comfy with... i originally went on the pill because at that point i'd have tried almost *anything* to see if it would make my cramps better :) and so far, so good--it's been about 2 years now, i think. so if it's recommended to you for medical reasons, it might be worth a try, is what I'm trying to say in a rambling way....

which pill did you take? which...brand, i guess. because i'm very seriously thinking of the pill mostly to regulate my cycle and decrease my flow, and the weight gain and possible depression terrify me because i think i have a genetic tendency to both and i don't want to give them any encouragement, and if you had no noticeable side effects i want to know what you took! :>

I was on desogen for a bit (stopped it cause it didn't help my cramps) and then orthotrycyclen. BUT different formulas will, of course, work differently for different people becuase bodies work differently :) just let your doctor know that those are concerns of yours and s/he should be able to recommend some and switch kinds if you do develop problems. good luck~

i went on the birth control pill 'diane 35' to ease my period cramps and to help with my acne. The result for me was deffinitely depression. It shortened my period, eased my cramps and lightened my acne, but it wasn't worth the psychological effects so i went off it.
My girlfriend went through some hormonal changes when she was on the drug. She was extrememly moody (we went through a lot of fights during that time) she also is experienced increased hair on her body. Nothing really that noticable, but something that definitely freaked her out.

During my first few months on orthotricyclen lo, the hair on my upper lip and forearms became more noticeable to me. I also got a few more zits than usual. Other than that, I was fine.

i've been on ortho tricyclene, which i hated, and yasmin, which has been fine after i got used to the hormones.

some people have a hard time with the hormones, but that usually varies from pill to pill.

there is a link between birth control pills and cervical dysplasia. doctors used to think that it was because women on birth control were "promiscuous" and more likely to contract hpv. now it seems that birth control can deplete the body of certain vitamins that are important to a strong immune system that can keep hpv at bay.

so, if you take birth control pills, you should also look into taking vitamins.
