I have been having sex with my current boyfriend for almost a month now. We don't use condoms, because I am on the pill. Today, when we had sex, I noticed there was blood, and a fairly good amount of it. It looked like I had started my period, but i'm not supposed to start for another 2 weeks. We stopped the sex when we noticed the blood, and it stopped when we stopped. It wasn't rough sex or anything either, and i wasn't dry. Does anyone know what this could be? and should i be concerned?

I had a UTI over a week ago that was healed by last weekend after my 5 days of Antibiotics. I'm guessing that may have something to do with it. We did have rather rough sex last night, but it didn't bleed then, or this morning when we did. Only this afternoon.

I just had a pap done about 3 weeks ago and nothing came back abnormal, but that was when we just started having sex.

Any input is welcome, thanks!

Supposedly, antibiotics interfere with the absorption of the hormones in the pill or otherwise render them less effective. This would mean that taking the antibiotics would theoretically cancel out your pill, so you'd have taken your hormone-free week early, so it'd be your "period." This is why it says on a lot of pill documentation that you need to use a back-up method of bc while taking antibiotics. This is what people have said for the last 20-30 years.

There's new (like last 5-10 years) evidence that antibiotics don't actually interfere with bc, but it's definitely true for some individuals that taking antibiotics makes it as if they hadn't taken the pill at all during that time. Clearly the issue merits more investigation, but at the moment, it's hard to say what's going on with so little evidence. So, maybe that's what's up. . .

How long have you been on the pill? Spotting is more likely in the first few months, but it can happen anytime.

That said, it could be that the increased movement from having sex *loosened* some old blood (I really can't think of a better way to phrase that hehe) and caused spotting. It's really not anything to be concerned about; it happens all the time with HBC and is just annoying.

Switching brands can do it. Usually spotting (for me) is that brown goo, but I've had bright red spotting before, too.

Out of curiosity, does your boyfriend have a large penis? I ask because I sometimes bleed when I have sex with my boyfriend. He is well endowed and the only man who has ever made me bleed during intercourse. If he is large I would say that it is safe to assume that could be the cause of the bleeding.

That happened to me. I usually start my period on a Tuesday or Wednesday of my sugar pills, but when my now ex-boyfriend and I had sex on the Sunday of my sugar pills, I started to gush blood right away. We had to stop because he was a little freaked out, haha. It also kind of felt like he hit my cervix and maybe it just kind of gave my period a little nudge along. I dunno about why yours started 2 weeks early, but it might have been because of your antibiotics messing with your HBC and screwing up the regular cycle, as other people have already mentioned.
