So I have been having the worst cramps all night. They come and go almost like contractions but as far as I know I am not pregnant.

I just started on ortho tricyclen lo. I did not take a pregnancy test before starting my pills since I have been having my period regularly and had no signs of being pregnant. I am supposed to be having my period right now. My period started on Sunday so I started my pills.  Well on Tuesday it disappeared. I have had light spotting but thats really it.

Earlier this evening I started getting these horrible sharp pains that feel like cramps. I normally don't have cramps like this. Ever. They will not stop. There is no specific timing to them and they are insanely painful. They get progressively worse then stop and I feel fine and all of the sudden it starts to hurt again and all of this repeats. I took a vicodin and they still are so bad I'm in tears. I have tried going to the bathroom and pushing when I get them because my first thought was that it was a clot trying to pass. While I was in the bathroom I noticed I have started bleeding again. It looks like regular period blood.

I am insanely paranoid that I was pregnant and starting my pills caused me to miscarry.  Could it be a miscarriage? Would a pregnancy test show a positive if I was pregnant? Could it just be side effects of the pill? Should I go to the doctor? Is it something else? What the heck is going on down there?

Hormonal birth control does not cause miscarriages; despite many years of women taking HBC while pregnant, there is no evidence that it negatively impacts a pregnancy once it has begun. In addition, if you had just started your period when you started to take the pills, then there is no reason to think that you would have been pregnant.

What is more likely is that starting active pills on the first day of bleeding stopped your period; and as a result, you're having unusually bad cramping and sporadic bleeding as your body and the pill sort of duke it out, metaphorically speaking. (Additionally, cramping can be a side-effect of hormonal birth control.)

That said, if the cramping is this bad it might indeed be a good idea to see a health care professional to rule out anything more serious; but the two things I can assure you of is that HBC does not cause miscarriages, and that if you were having your period when you started HBC, then it is extremely unlikely that you were pregnant.

your cramps sound exactly like mine while i was on the pill. I never really had cramps while on my period unless there ws aclot trying to pass. On BC however, I had the most excruciating pains i have ever had on my life, and it happened with OTC and the two ther BC's I was on. My body just doesn't like BC. I would at least call your Dr. I don;t think cramps that bad are normal.
