I read a past post on this subject, but I'm a bit easily frightened and I was looking for some reassurance.

I have been having some brown discharge. Now, I'm not on the pill. I am sexually active, but we are VERY careful. We always use a condom. I always pee afterward to prevent infections. I am on a new ADD medication as of last week, could this be causing it? This IS the time I would be ovulating, I believe (I had my period about two weeks ago) so could this be normal? It's never happened to me... I'm just really nervous. I guess it's normal to freak out. I'm new to sex. I think it's HIGHLY unlikely that I could be pregnant but... ahhh.

So, what could be causing this? Is it normal? Should I go to a gynecologist immediately?

Brown blood = old blood. Nothing to worry about.

Browse through the memories and vaginapagina.com to find out about discharge and old blood.

You don't need to go to a gynecologist immediately, no.

Brown discharge, as the other commenter mentioned, is almost always just old blood that didn't leave your uterus during your last period.

Now, the question is why is it happening. Some women occasionally experience a bit of spotting around ovulation, so that could be it. Additionally, sexual activity sometimes seems to kick out some old blood that was hanging around in the uterus.

Less likely, it can be a sign of a vaginal infection -- not necessarily an STI, but those and other normal vaginal infections.

I'd say hang tight. If it goes away soon and there aren't any other symptoms, and it doesn't become a regular problem, then it's probably just a little bit of bleeding. If it continues for awhile or you experience other symptoms, then a doctor can test for infections to rule those out.

If you're due to be ovulating right now, I wouldn't really worry about pregnancy -- after all, if you were about ovulating now you wouldn't be experiencing any implantation bleeding. So I wouldn't sweat about that at all, especially since you have been using contraception every time.

In addition to being tied to ovulation, it could also be the result of over-vigorous sex. If your partner bumped your cervix during intercourse, that could cause some spotting as some women have more delicate cervical tissue than others. (I'm one of them.) There may also have been a little micro-tear in your vaginal wall that would necessarily cause pain, but could still allow a little blood to seep out.
