I woke up this morning with the very early symptoms of a UTI: pressure and a little bit of pain while urinating. I immediately drank a lot of water to flush my system, I'm carrying around my large water bottle today, and I'm going to avoid sugary food and drinks.

This couldn't have come at a worse time. I'm almost completely booked for the next two days, including an interview, a ton of classes that I can't miss, and a large group project to finish for Thursday. Unless I seriously move around my schedule, I'm not going to be able to get to the health center until Thursday morning. What a pain! In the past, I've had UTIs that progressed really quickly (my last one went from mild symptoms to full blown kidney infection in less than a day) but I've always had it happen when I was fairly dehydrated.

So, to the point: Have any of you had to delay treatment of a UTI for a couple of days? Do you think keeping very hydrated for the next two days will keep the symptoms at bay enough for me to continue a normal life? Obviously, if it gets more serious I will see a doctor immediately, but can I cause major harm if my symptoms are mild and I wait until Thursday for treatment?

Thanks so much! Have a great day!

Honestly, if your past UTIs have gone to kidney infections quickly, I think your best and safest option is to try to see a doctor now *before* it becomes a critical issue and you can't do anything but go to the ER or urgent care. My doctor will call in a Cipro prescription for me, because he's seen me in the past and diagnosed UTIs before. Could you call your doc and see if s/he would be willing to get you meds without an appointment?

i agree with this.

i've gone a while without seeing a doctor before, but if it's spread so quickly before, i wouldn't risk it. god knows i won't risk it again! kidney pain is not fun, as i'm sure you know.

When I had a UTI in November I waited 2 weeks before going to the doctor. I drank tons of water and cranberry juice to try to flush it out, and, obviously it didn't do much for the infection but eased my symptoms quite a lot. If it's not too much of a pain (haha pun intended) to go pee every 15 minutes, then I personally wouldn't worry about waiting 2 days.

(My UTIs have progressed fast, too...last week I got a kidney infection the morning after first having symptoms of a UTI.)

Def see the Dr ASAP!! Is there an after-hours clinic you can go to after classes? Water and Cranberry juice (the real stuff not the sugary cranberry blends) can help, you can also try cranberry pills, you can get them at most health food stores. But really dr ASAP is you best bet!

I vote you see the doctor right away. Especially with your history.

I waited two weeks when I had one, and the first few days were just the beginning of awful. At the time I was drinking well over a litre of water every day - it definitely didn't help.

Calling, or seeing, a doctor will only take a few minutes.

Take cranberry pills!

This happened to me, and in the end the cranberry pills were so effective that they actually got rid of any bacteria causing the infection.

Granted in my case it may not have been a full-on infection in the first place, but in the very least it may help your situation if you have to wait.

I just had my first UTI a couple of weeks ago. I had absolutely no idea what the symptoms meant, so I ended up delayed treatment for at least a day. When I finally researched online and found out I had a UTI, I immediately went out and bought cranberry concentrate, 100% juice. I drank a half cranberry, half water mixture solidly for the next few hours and lo and behold, my UTI was gone, just like that. I don't know if perhaps my case was just mild or slugging through cranberry juice (urgh) is an effective treatment, but putting off any treatment didn't seem to do me any harm. I agree that staying extremely hydrated is a good idea.
