I went for my very first pap smear/vaginal examination yesterday - and I know they're not supposed to hurt, but man. I totally cried - probably because I'm a PIV virgin and needed the tests because I've been having some ovarian pain in the last few months, not because they're supposed to hurt (as a result I have a clear ultrasound and no visibly abnormal vaginal...stuff, which is pretty good).
Anywho - my vag hurts like crazy and the odor of it has changed since the exam. Similar to the scent some people get in their pee after eating asparagus (only not quite as distinctive or strong), but I've consumed nothing with high enough concentrations of sulfur and it's not my urine. Is this...supposed to happen? Granted the pain could be because the exam aggravated the existing pain in my ovary, I'm willing to bet that's it. But the scent thing is new, and I know that's sometimes a tip off to other things. Just...not what, specifically.
I think I'm just paranoid because the doctor let me touch the speculum before he...put it on up there, and I couldn't help but think "This feels so unhygenic...at least they heated it first". So...feel free to call me paranoid. Haha.

Date: 2008-01-05 12:28 am (UTC)What size speculum did they use? I've had a child, and I still need my gyn to use the smallest speculum possible when she gives me a pap smear because anything remotely big makes me scream and cry.
I get a weird discharge after I have smear tests sometimes, it happens to me pretty much any time I have any PIV sex, I figure it's just my vagina/cervix reaction to being poked/prodded.

My gynaecologist has an extra small one and my doctor only has a medium and large. I can JUST about cope with a medium one, but the one time a locum doctor tried to put a large one (ha ha sex joke) into my vagina (he thought I was in labour) I screamed and kicked him in the face.

Date: 2008-01-05 12:30 am (UTC)the smell is probably from the lube they used to get the speculum in.. and being stressed out and tense makes them way worse.. but if you are in crying amount of pain maybe you should call the doctor again.. crying pain for me is LOT of pain though
