i just figured i would post this for anyone that is considering a medical abortion as an option, or is worried about going though it.
i had a medical abortion, via RU-486.

i got a lot of good input from this site when i was considering my options, which i totally appreciated.

i scheduled an appointment with the local clinic and i had to pay $450 off the bat. i considered my options for quite awhile before i went through with it and it was the absolute best option for me. the staff was very kind and considerate throughout. no lie they were a completely sweet bunch of ladies.

after a series of sonograms and exams the doc wrote me perscription, which they filled at the facility, and they sent me home. didnt even have to go to the pharmacy, that was nice.

i had a good amount of bleeding and pain, but nothing nearly as bad as i expected. it was really uneventful and i was totally relieved by how easily it went.

i have emotional consequences obviously, but the physical part when super smooth. just posting this i guess for anyone in the same situation. happy with my choice overall

OP, thank you for trusting VP enough to share your story. We're honored to have you here, as always.

Commenters: We'd like to remind you all of VP's rules (http://www.vaginapagina.com/index.php?title=VaginaPagina_FAQ), specifically with regard to abortion debate in VP on LJ:

"VaginaPagina as a body does not take a stance on abortion, or on any other controversial issues for that matter. It's not that we don't all have our own personal opinions, but political biases aren't what we're about. We're about health and access to information.

"We ask that our members refrain from arguing about abortion issues here as it's counterproductive to community cohesiveness."

Click here (http://www.vaginapagina.com/index.php?title=VaginaPagina_FAQ#What_is_VP.27s_position_on_abortion.3F) to read more.

We'd also like to remind everyone that abortion debate is fine in the "Politics" section of the VP.com Forums (http://forums.vaginapagina.com), but is unwelcome everywhere else on the site/LJ community.

VP is fabulous because of its members, so please take care to uphold the rules and your usual wonderfulness as you comment to this and every post. Thank you!

Thank you for the information -- I hope I never wind up needing one, but it's good to know the options, and it's good to know that the physical and social parts went so smoothly for you.

**offers a hug on the emotional side, if it would be useful**

Thanks for posting this! I don't need one now or anything but if I ever get pregnant, I'll probably get one so it's nice to hear that it can be an easy process, at least physically. *hugs*

Thanks again for posting this. I know that any time I'm about to undergo a medical procedure, I look around online for other people's experiences with it. It's really great that you're willing to give us the details here. I'm sure your story will help ease minds. As for the emotional stuff... I wish you strength and peace of mind. Be well.

Thanks for posting this, super-helpful :)

So do you know if you're totally finished with the procedure? I ask because I've read that often medical abortion requires specific follow-up visits to the doctor (since RU-486 doesn't have 100% effectiveness, though of course nothing does), both to make sure that everything went properly and to determine if a further process, like vacuum aspiration, is needed. Or is your heavy bleeding/pain enough proof that it worked?

Be well! *hugs*

I'm not the OP, but when I did mine, I did a follow-up ultrasound a few weeks later. Then I got an IUD, since condoms obviously weren't working for me.

just curious, how many months along were you?

It can't have been many. Doesn't the ability to have a medical abortion/use RU-486 have a fairly early cut off point?

Wiki says it's 49 days in the USA and 64 in the UK and Sweden.

PP told me I could get it up to 9 weeks, so that's 63 days. I was five weeks two days when I had it.

I'm glad to hear it went well. I had a vacuum aspiration abortion about a year and a half ago and felt mostly positive about it, though the emotional after-stuff is a little distressing. I had a hard time deciding between medical and vacuum aspiration, and though I don't regret my choice, I'm sure it was comforting to be able to do it at home. :hugs:

I also had a medical abortion. It was a whole lot of bleeding and pain, like you said, but went smooth for me as well. Obviously I haven't experienced the other side of abortion, surgery, but for anybody absolutely sure abortion was the choice for them, I would recommend the medical.
