I should probably know the answer to this, but to be honest I'm kind of a noob when it comes to my plumbing.

Usually my menstrual blood is very dark - always has been, and I've read a lot that that's how it's supposed to be, as opposed to blood like when you cut yourself, which is bright red. Well, I just got my period the other day and it was dark for the first day and very heavy. Today, the blood is bright red, but the flow is normal to heavy.

Is this normal? I have PCOS and am not sexually active, if that makes any difference.

It sounds totally normal to me :). Menstrual blood can vary a lot in color, heaviness, and even texture (lots of clots, no clots, etc.). Has anything in your life changed recently (diet, exercise, illness, etc.)? If so, the change could be what's causing the difference, but if not, it's probably just normal variation. Especially if you're on the young-ish side (teens to early 20s), it's most likely either a random fluke, or a lomg-term change. Either way, doesn't sound like anything to worry about. And kudos for taking steps to learn more about your "plumbing"!

I wouldn't worry about it unless it went on for a long time. Sometimes bright red blood can be a sign of iron-deficiency, which happened to me (woo PCOS making my periods last, well, 40-90 days of bleeding).

Just keep an eye on it and see what happens.
