I like the second story. I'm usually the one with a lot of privilege in any given interaction and I am torn sometimes about how to use it. On the one hand, it costs me less to call out injustice, so I ought to do it; on the other hand, I don't want to speak for other people. Sometimes "allies" can get overzealous, or just get it wrong.
It is pretty unhappy-making, though, that the narrator has just cause to believe her sister-in-law had more of an effect than she did.
