If my partner and I are having sex without a condom, can pre-cum cause pregnancy? How far back should we pull out before he actually ejaculates or does it not matter just as long as we bring it out soon enough before? I don't really want to take birth control right now for certain reasons, but I do want him to experience my vagina without a condom. I just want to do it the "safest" way possible without getting pregnant. Silly, I know. Any answers would be helpful, thanks and have a good day.

yes, pre cum can contain sperm. It's rare but pregnancy can happen just from pre cum.

He needs to remove his penis all the way out of your vagina. And make sure he shoots his wad somewhere other than anywhere near you.

It's possible. Pre-cum on it's own doesn't have any sperm in it, but if he ejaculates & doesn't urinate before you have sex again some semen can survive & then get you pregnant. Withdrawl is only about 80% effective with perfect use and most men don't use it perfectly.

I'm not sure how exactly (if it was pre-cum or my partner not pulling out soon enough) but I got pregnant while using the withdrawl method. It's definitely not a good choice as your only form of birth control if you aren't willing to accept the consequences.

Actually, according to Contraceptive Technology (http://www.contraceptivetechnology.org/table.html), withdrawal is 96% effective with perfect use. The lower effectiveness rates -- Contraceptive Technology lists 73%, but I've seen others list closer to 80% -- come from typical use.

I didn't know that. Thanks for the link.

No problem. It's still a good idea, I think, to know the typical use rate, too, since, like you mentioned, it can be a difficult method to use perfectly.

FAM, or fertility awareness method, is likely your best bet if you don't want to use a barrier or hormones. Actually, an IUD would be more effective, but depending on your reasons for not getting a hormonal method that might not be your cup of tea either.

There's lots of information on FAM around Vaginapagina, or some of the other ladies will have more info on it than I do. Just pulling out is awfully risky, when not combined with other methods.

I was also going to suggest FAM in the absence of any other birth control. (My boy and I use condoms, but I keep my cycle on the back burner at all times.)

can pre-cum cause pregnancy?

Yep, s'how I got my son :)

If you practice any kind of fertility awareness, there are "safer" days to have unprotected sex when you're less likely to be fertile, but even that's not going to be anywhere near 100%, of course.

If your reasons for avoiding BC are the hormones, there are non-hormonal options besides condoms; The ParaGard copper IUD (or an equivalent product), or a diaphragm or Lea's Shield, to name a few. Also, there are low-dose hormonal options, such as low-dose pills, Mirena (or equivalent) IUD, or the Nuva Ring. All of these methods do require a doctor's visit and a prescription.

Some over-the-counter options are pretty much condoms, or spermicides, which come in a variety of forms, such as foam, films, capsules, sponges, and just the liquid itself. I can't cite you statistics, so maybe another member can step in here and help out more.

You may wish to check out the section on withdrawal (http://www.vaginapagina.com/index.php?title=Non-Hormonal_Birth_Control#Spermicide) in VP's Vulvapedia entry on Non Hormonal Birth Control (http://www.vaginapagina.com/index.php?title=Non-Hormonal_Birth_Control#Non-Hormonal_Birth_Control_.28NHBC.29). There are some links that discuss the results of scientific studies on the presence of sperm in pre-ejaculatory fluid. Basically, while pre-ejaculatory fluid generally contains no viable sperm on its own and doesn't even come from the same place as semen, it can pick up any semen left in the urethra from a previous ejaculation, provided they haven't been flushed out by other means (usually urination).

If your decision not to take birth control right now refers specifically to hormonal birth control, you may also wish to check out some of the other options listed in the Vulvapedia entry.

"...it can pick up any semen left in the urethra..."

It can pick up any sperm left in the urethra.

I should really not try to type when I am tired. ;)

Well, since my best friend is currently pregnant (had to push back the wedding and everything) using the tried and true Pull Out Method without ANY birth control, then yes. Pre cum can (and will IMO if you play with that fire long enough) indeed get you pregnant.

Why risk it though?

Maybe use spermicide or something, to still be safe but not have to use a condom.
