How long do I have to wait to take a pregnancy test?

My husband and I had unprotected sex last night for the first time in a long while (in other words, there was no chance of me being pregnant beforehand).

Typically I know most women would wait until it is obvious that their period is late, however my cycle has always been very irregular and I could go for two months before getting my period... so waiting isn't really a reliable way for me.

The "early" tests say things like they are accurate four days before your period, but in my case I have no clue when that is.

Anyone have any idea how many days after the time of sex that the test would be reliable?

Approximately two weeks, but the longer you wait the more likely it is to be accurate. Good luck!

I've always heard 2 weeks, but some people start a bit earlier because they're impatient, and it's always better to test again at three and/or four weeks just to be sure.

When I took plan B they told me the earliest a pregnancy test could work would be 10 days, I think that's with the early-response ones.

Implantation usually takes 7-10 days after conception (and remember, it can take a day or two to concieve, IIRC), and then measurable levels of hCG have to be created. So that's why two weeks is often recommended (which in a typical 28-day cycle coincides with the onset of menstruation).

Also, since your cycle is really irregular and you don't have a period for a couple of months it's highly likely that your luteal phase and ovulation are irregular as well.
