Seconded. When I was going to be an exchange student in the US one of the conditions was that I took health insurance. You really need it in case you get sick or something and you can't afford the treatment (like, more than a simple mild infection or something).
IMO, if you can't afford health insurance while travelling you can't afford to travel.
